#2023travelwish There are plenty of palaces in Portugal but if you can only visit one, this should be it (Queluz is another must-see!) Located on top of a hill, there are great views and you can see the ocean from here. Although the views are great, you’ll probably visit because of the beautiful colors and amazing architecture. It’s very popular so it’s recommended you get tickets online in advance. You can either reach it by licensed tuk-tuk or on foot, which is a nice walk through the woods.

Sintra has to be on your itinerary if you are visiting Lisbon. The town is small enough for one day visit, but has alot to see. We left Lisbon at 830 and had breakfast in Sintra before embarking on our journey. First stop was Quinta de Regaleira - a private home and garden built in the early 20th century - and one of the most interesting structures in the garden is the 9 levels spiral well, hidden amongst the trees and rocks. Our second stop was the colorful and almost Disney like Peña Palace. perched on top of the hill and can be reached by bus from the town center. The last stop of the day was the Moorish Castle which is only 10 min away on foot from the palace. One can see miles away from the castle top and even Lisbon on a clear day. Sintra is only 40 min away by train from Lisbon from Rosario Staton. The history of this magical place begins in the 12th century with the construction of a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena. I visited Cabo da Roca + Sintra, which are must-visit places in Portugal, in one day, so I'll share the route I took 🌟 ⚠️The timetable may change. Some of the gloriously quirky things that can be seen in the town include a carnival style shop devoted to canned Sardines! They’re dotted across Portugal, whilst they’re a little niche, it’s a cool shop to explore. There’s also shops selling shoes made out of cork and of course, Port wine is on offer in abundance. 1€ for a shot - can’t really go wrong with that! Having explored the historic centre, it’s time to visit one of the palaces that make this town so famous. With at least 5 to choose from, you’ve got to visit at least one. So which one did we go for? Palacio de Pena is the crown jewel of Sintra's palaces and castles. Perched majestically atop a hill in the Sintra Mountains, this 19th-century masterpiece is an architectural wonder that will leave you spellbound. With its vibrant facades, intricate stonework, and whimsical turrets, Pena Palace is a photographer's dream come true. And as you wander through its fantastical grounds, you'll feel like you've stepped into a real-life fairy tale - think Disney magic, minus the theme park vibes! It is also the most popular of the palaces in Sintra, and access is only available at 30 minute intervals. Once tickets are gone, they’re gone! So you’ll want to book in advance. A must-see attraction when you go to #Portugal It's easy to take a photo for the cover of Lonely Planet~ Take a train from Rossio Station in #Lisbon, and you'll arrive in Sintra in about 40 minutes. There are shuttle buses in the town that go directly to the castle entrance~very convenient transportation! Note‼ ️ The castle entrance is limited to a certain number of people, so it's best to buy tickets in advance. If you buy tickets on site, you may have to wait for several time slots before you can enter~ But even if you have to wait, it doesn't matter, because in addition to the castle, Sintra has many surrounding attractions to visit. Even with a downloadable map from the ticket purchase site, the garden's complex terrain is so intricate that you might easily get lost. Hidden throughout the garden are secret tunnels and small caves, making you feel like the protagonist of an RPG game. ✨ The most famous feature is the "Initiation Well," a tower-like structure with a spiral staircase descending into the ground. Its size is unimaginable from the entrance! Other attractions include small waterfalls, chapels, caves, and plazas, offering plenty to explore. I spent about three hours wandering through the site. If you visit Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is an absolute must-see spot. 🧚 Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is easily accessible from Lisbon by train. Unlike Lisbon's coastal scenery, Sintra offers lush green landscapes nestled in the mountains.
