[2025 Shenyang Attraction] Travel Guide for Dalian Zhongshan Square (Updated Jul)

Go to check in at the architectural complex of Zhongshan Square and the Sino-German Style Street, just passing by the renovated Zhongshan Road "European Style Street, Goethe Bookstore" the street corner really amazed me. Following the side wall of the Goethe Bookstore, I noticed the familiar ship rudder-shaped parapet decoration, although I don't know what period of decorative art, walking to the back alley, there is a different world, small shops are lined up, simple basketball boards, a peaceful market life. The Sino-German International Style Street is so photogenic! There is so much beauty when your eyes lay lost in all the city lights in Dalian. This was my first time in this beautiful city. After settling ourselves , we went out for a walk nearby the hotel where we stayed. We found old and new buildings around the city, the lights make it more incredible. It wasn't that crowded. We had fun walking around downtown, there are lots of shops around, foods , jewelries, and many more stuffs which you can find interesting. Zhongshan Square, Shenyang, Liaoning On this trip to Northeast China, I once again visited Zhongshan Square in Shenyang. Strolling through the square, you'll find a group of historic buildings that have witnessed significant historical changes, from Japanese colonial rule to the founding of the People's Republic of China. These buildings not only have different styles, but each one also has its own unique story. Zhongshan Square was built in 1913 and was initially called Central Square. In 1919, it was renamed Naniwa Square. According to records, the center of the square originally had a white marble pillar that gradually tapered from bottom to top, resembling a bayonet. Later, the Nationalist government replaced the bayonet monument with a slogan monument, which read "The nation above all, the people above all." In 1969, the square underwent a major renovation, and a large sculpture featuring a statue of Chairman Mao was erected. The former site of the Yamato Hotel, built in 1929, is now the Liaoning Hotel. The former site of the Yokohama Specie Bank Mukden Branch, built in 1925, is now the Zhongshan Square Branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. The former site of the Mukden Police Department, built in 1929, is now the Shenyang Public Security Bureau. The former site of the Mitsui Trading Company Building, built in 1937, was once the headquarters of the Shenyang Air Force and the Shenyang Garrison Command, and is now the Zhongshan Branch of the Huludao Bank. The former site of the Bank of Korea Mukden Branch, built in 1920, was once the Manchurian Industrial Bank, and is now the Zhongshan Road Branch of the Huaxia Bank. The former site of the Oriental Development Company Mukden Branch, built in 1922, was once the headquarters of the Japanese Kwantung Army, and is now the Shenyang Federation of Trade Unions. Walking through Zhongshan Square in Shenyang, these buildings seem to take you through time and space, witnessing the changes of history. Each building has its own unique story, reminding us to remember history, never forget national humiliation, and strive for progress.

The group sculpture in Zhongshan Square, Shenyang, is a work of art with red memories and a landmark building in Shenyang. The sculpture is a group sculpture composed of a statue of Chairman Mao and 58 workers, peasants, businessmen, students, and soldiers. It is also equipped with a lightning rod inside and can withstand a magnitude 6 earthquake. These design details make people marvel at the meticulous consideration of the designers. The history of this sculpture can be traced back to the 1920s. After several renaming, it was finally named Zhongshan Square. Since 1981, Zhongshan Square has been a landmark attraction in the city and one of the best-preserved group sculptures of its kind in China. The sculpture is 20 meters high, and the statue of Chairman Mao is 10.6 meters high, with a base of 8.1 meters high, 11 meters wide, and 23 meters long, and the group sculpture is 3.5 meters high. These huge numbers reflect the grandeur of the sculpture. The statue of Chairman Mao faces west and raises his right hand, which is also a detail that many people are particularly interested in.

😯 Just outside “European Walking Street” is this nice plaza with an impressively huge monument of Chairman Mao surrounded by the proletariat. Re-constructed in 1969, this huge statue is surrounded by an open square where locals used to gather pre-Covid. You would expect some dancing troupes but as we went in late November, it might have been too cold. 🥘 Close by is Korean town where there are nice fresh Korean snacks that pop up at night. Well worth a visit!

I had never been to Dalian and my Chinese is not the greatest. Through C trip I managed to book a hotel and the fact that they have an English version just takes the stress out of traveling. In Dalian China we visited Venice Zhongshang which is a replica of really beautiful buildings from around the world. Thank you C trip for taking the stress out of travel. I plan on traveling again as soon as I can and of course I’ll be using C Trip because of their affordable hotel and flight prices.
