One Of The Best Free Things In Auckland, The Stunning Winter Gardens
Auckland and New Zealand are famous for being expensive destinations to visit, however there are still some amazing free things to do! The best is the Winter Gardens in the beautiful Auckland domain, located near the Auckland National Museum it’s a great stop that’s totally free or charge.
The garden is made up of two huge greenhouses, connecting forecourt and an out of this world fernery. I wasn’t expecting it to be this stunning but I was blown away, the greenhouses contain immaculately maintained flowers - some I have never seen before. The forecourt was water features, statues, benches and ornate hedges - there is also a lot of information around the flowers to help you understand their origin and their purpose.
For me a highlight was the fernery, a huge outdoor area full of ferns that made me feel like I was in Jurassic park - it felt like I’d been transported to another world.
The garden is a listed and protected monument of NZ, it was finished in 1928 and has had various refurbishments over the years. Definitely a hidden gem of the city, well worth a visit!
