All Trip Moments about Katsuyama
If you don't go here, you're missing out! Travel to these huge spots 🦖🗿❄️
[Fukui]
I thought the Great Buddha of Nara was the biggest in Japan, but I never imagined that the Echizen Great Buddha was the biggest in Japan! It's very impressive and well worth seeing✨
The Buddha statues lined up on three walls of the hall
Each one has a different face
It's amazing how much attention has been paid to the details👏
I tried lying flat out in the main hall
I tried ringing the bell as if I was a dwarf
It was a temple full of fun☺️
By the way, the stick used to ring the bell is a bit
as heavy as a dumbbell, so be prepared😂
I want to go back to Katsuyama again soon, where you can see the Great Buddha and dinosaurs✨
🏷️Save it and use it as a reference for your next outing♥

Fukui Prefecture Travel Diary: A 2-Day Rental Car Trip
Recently, I traveled to Fukui Prefecture over the course of two days. Although it was a short trip, I was able to fully enjoy the tourist spots, history, and gourmet food.
Day 1: A Journey of History and Nature
I departed from Haneda Airport on a 7:25 AM flight and arrived at Komatsu Airport at 8:25 AM. The first destination was 'Komatsu no Mori.' Here, I got to see huge construction machinery up close, feeling like a kid again. After that, I headed to 'Tojinbo,' where I enjoyed the stunning views of the cliffs and the expansive blue Sea of Japan from around 11 AM. After lunch, I visited 'Maruoka Castle.' The imposing presence of the oldest existing castle keep in Japan was impressive. In the afternoon, I visited 'Eiheiji Temple' and the 'Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins.' The serene atmosphere of Eiheiji and the historical romance of the Asakura Clan Ruins made for a fulfilling day.
Day 2: A Journey of Gardens and Dinosaurs
The second day started at 'Yokokan Garden.' The tranquility of the beautiful Japanese garden was soothing. After that, I enjoyed the spectacular view from 'Echizen Ono Castle.' For lunch, I had Fukui's specialty, sauce katsudon, at 'Nomura-ya Shokudo.' In the afternoon, I visited the 'Echizen Daibutsu' and finally the 'Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.' The impressive dinosaur exhibits were thrilling and enjoyable even for adults.
Throughout the two days, I was able to fully savor the charms of Fukui Prefecture. With its abundant nature, history, and gourmet food, Fukui is a place I want to visit again and again!

📍Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
I barely made it in time for the reopening on my first visit to Fukui, but I finally made it 🦖❤️
It's so big that you need at least an hour and a half!
And you have to make a reservation in advance 💡
I managed to get in at the last minute, but it's not good for your heart lol
You can take a photo the day before or on the day, so make sure to make a reservation in advance.
I really wanted to take a photo on the escalator, but there was no one to take it for me, so I combined it ☺️☺️☺️☺️

This is a historic shrine with the remains of a medieval religious city.
The grounds are quiet and have a mysterious atmosphere⛩️
The greenery and moss are so beautiful that it is called Moss Shrine✨
The grounds are quite large, but if you walk around while looking at the scenery, you can walk around it in no time.
There are also many historical sites.
It seems that the excavation of the remains of this shrine has not yet been completed.
If you go to [Hakusan Heisenji History Exploration Mahoroba], which is located very close to this shrine, you can get an introduction to the highlights.
It might be more interesting if you do some research before going😊

Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
Reservations are required for entry!!
The restaurant inside the museum closes reservations for the day once the numbered tickets have been distributed.
You can re-enter with your ticket stub, so there is no limit to the number of items sold at the souvenir shop and restaurant just before the entrance.
There are only a few tables, so if there is a seat that looks like it might be empty, you will feel like people are looking at you.

Fukui Prefecture, the city of dinosaurs!
I took the Thunderbird Express to Fukui Prefecture using the [Dice Ticket] sold by JR West 🦕
It was my first time going to Fukui Prefecture, and I got tons of dinosaurs 🦖
I expected the Dinosaur Museum to be crowded during the Obon period, but it didn't seem that bad around 2pm on 8/11...? That's how it felt.
Whitesaurus is on the way from Katsuyama Station to the museum, and after arriving by bus, we walked for about 20 minutes in the scorching heat to take photos... 🥵 lol
At night, we went to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant called Kita no Oyaji, and ate a lot, spending about 10,000 yen for two people 🍣🍻
The next day, I went to Europaken Sohonten, which was about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, because apparently sauce katsudon is a specialty of Fukui.
It opens at 11am, and when we arrived at 10:50am, there were more than 10 groups lined up! We waited 15 minutes after the store opened, then were ushered to the second floor and ordered a large katsudon and a minced meat croquette 🤤 Of course we also had 🍻...lol
It was delicious😍

At this dinosaur museum, which is one of the largest in Japan, you can see various dinosaur skeletal specimens and reconstructed models of ancient creatures.
Even if you're not originally interested in dinosaurs, you'll enjoy it!

A spectacular Tyrannosaurus that you'll want to see at least once!
📍Whitesaurus in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture
This giant, pure white Tyrannosaurus object, measuring 17 meters in length, suddenly appears on the way to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.
Made of fiber-reinforced plastic, its towering white form is impressive, and it is a popular photogenic spot.
The original Whitesaurus was made of washi paper, but its neck fell off, so it was reborn as the second generation in 2017.
In the snowy winter scenery, it shows its beauty as if it blends into the silvery world, and on sunny days, the contrast with the blue sky is a delight to visitors.
It is located in Gohonji, Muraoka-cho, Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, on the way to the Dinosaur Museum and Ski Jam Katsuyama.
There is also a parking lot for about 10 cars, making it easy to access.
When you visit the Dinosaur Museum, be sure to stop by the White Saurus.
The collaboration between its impressive appearance and the different scenery each season will make your travel memories even more enriching.

Winter Wonders in Fukui – Temples, Dinosaurs & Peaceful Shrines
#cityplaybook
Fukui in winter is something special. With quiet temples wrapped in snow, crisp mountain air, and a few unexpected surprises, it’s a destination that blends tradition with curiosity.
I started my journey at Eiheiji Temple, one of Japan’s most important Zen temples. The sound of snow underfoot and the calm silence of the halls created a meditative kind of magic.
Next, I visited Kehi Shrine, known for its massive torii gate and peaceful grounds—especially beautiful in the soft winter light.
And then came something completely different: Echizen Daibutsu at Daishizan Seidaiji. The scale of the statue (and the temple around it) was absolutely jaw-dropping. It’s quiet, grand, and strangely under the radar.
To finish off the day, I couldn’t resist the Fukui Dinosaur Museum. One of the best in the world, it’s full of life-sized skeletons and fun exhibits—because even peaceful trips need a little roar.
Why I recommend Fukui in winter:
・You’ll experience deep stillness at some of Japan’s most sacred places
・The mix of quiet temples and quirky museums makes for a truly unique trip

Dinosaur Kingdom Fukui Prefecture must-see attractions: Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
When it comes to Fukui Prefecture, in addition to tasting delicacies such as Echizen crab, the Dinosaur Museum is definitely one of the must-see attractions.
Fukui Prefecture is known as the Kingdom of Dinosaurs. Dinosaur fossils unearthed here account for about 80% of the total in Japan. It is a special place for dinosaur research. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is known as one of the three largest dinosaur museums in the world. It houses a large number of precious dinosaur fossil exhibits, as well as moving bionic dinosaurs! It takes at least 2-3 hours to visit the entire museum!
We recommend taking the "New Sensation XR Bus WOW RIDE" which goes directly from JR Fukui Station to the Dinosaur Museum. The entire journey only takes 55 minutes and the process is very lively and interesting. It will definitely be an unforgettable experience!

A Slow Day in Fukui – Dinosaurs, Temples & Sweet Treats
#cityplaybook
Fukui might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a trip to Japan—but that’s exactly what makes it so special. It’s quiet, scenic, and full of unexpected charm. Perfect for a laid-back day of exploring.
First stop: the Fukui Dinosaur Museum, one of the best in Asia! Giant skeletons, life-sized models, and interactive exhibits make it just as exciting for adults as it is for kids.
After that burst of prehistoric energy, I took a peaceful stroll through Heisenji Hakusan Shrine—a moss-covered temple with ancient stone paths and forest surroundings. It’s the kind of place that feels like it belongs in a Studio Ghibli film.
Nearby is Shirayama Shrine, equally serene and rich in history.
To end the day, I stopped at Lovely Bokujo Milk Chaya for soft serve ice cream. Rich, creamy, and made with local milk—it was the perfect way to wrap up a gentle, satisfying day.
Why I recommend Fukui:
・It’s full of hidden gems that mix nature, culture, and fun in the best way
・Crowd-free and calm—ideal for a slow, refreshing getaway

A sacred place opened by Yasusumi in the year of Yorogen (717) as a base for worshipping Mt. Hakusan.
During the Sengoku period, at its peak, there were 48 shrines, 36 halls, and 8,000 boin. However, in the year of Tensho 2 (1574), the Ikko Ikki broke out in Echizen, and the entire mountain was burned down. After that, in 1583, Kenkai tried to rebuild it, but it was much smaller than the scale of its heyday.
In the Meiji period, Heisen-ji Temple abolished the temple name according to the Shinto-Buddha Separation Order, and the temple-related buildings were demolished and became Hakusan Shrine. When a full-scale excavation began in the first year of Heisei, numerous cobblestones, stone walls, and boin ruins were discovered, and the full picture of the religious city, which was said to be the largest in Japan at that time, was gradually revealed. It has been found that it was once more than ten times the size of the current precincts, and excavations are still underway.

There was also an excavation experience corner, so the excitement never stopped!
And the most fun thing was the dinosaur-wrapped bus 🚌🦖!
It took about an hour from Fukui Station on a special bus that showed dinosaur videos. The exterior and interior were filled with dinosaurs, and it felt like the adventure to the museum started on the bus! Not only children, but adults were excited too ♪
