Hangzhou l Take advantage of the 624 West Lake Day to go - 📍The former residence of Hu Xueyan, a red-topped businessman in the late Qing Dynasty
Hu Xueyan's ancestral home is Anhui. He ran a money shop in Hangzhou as his main business. After he became rich, he expanded into pawnshops, real estate, salt, tea, cloth, shipping, grain trading, Chinese medicine, and even arms. Empress Dowager Cixi awarded him a yellow horse hat, a second-rank official rank, and a red hat. ▫️Hu Xueyan was Zuo Zongtang's money bag💰
The contradiction between Li Hongzhang and Zuo Zongtang: Recovering Xinjiang
Li advocated giving up Xinjiang and spending all the money on the navy. But Cixi supported Zuo Zongtang, and Hu Xueyan helped Zuo Zongtang raise money in the rear. ▫️Architecture🏘️
Don't look at the towering white walls, there are pavilions and attics inside, scattered and orderly. It is a mansion that cost 3 million taels of silver (now converted to about 1 billion RMB🤩) and took three years to build!
Generally, wealthy people use mahogany to make furniture, but Hu Xueyan used mahogany to build houses. Many pillars, doors, windows, and wood carvings are made of golden nanmu and red sandalwood. The copper water pipes in the house are all imported from Europe. Such a large sum of money is the most luxurious house in modern times.
Walk into the entrance from the bluestone road in the side alley to buy a ticket. After swiping the ticket, the first stop is the sedan chair hall, which has two exquisitely crafted mahogany official sedan chairs. The plaque on the door "Mianshan Chengrong" was given by the emperor. In particular, "Shan" has two less strokes, which means that there is no end to doing good deeds.
The second door is usually not open, and it has the Hu family motto "Xiu De Yan Xian". The second door knocker is very special, with one hand holding a ring, indicating that the hand holds great power, and some people say that it controls the world.
Hu Xueyan has a wife and 12 concubines.
Main Hall: 🦁 Hundred Lions Building 🦁
(The railings on the second floor are decorated with a hundred small lions carved from red sandalwood, and the lion eyes are inlaid with gold)
It is a place for entertaining guests and discussing matters, and it is also where Hu's wife and mother live.
Qingya Hall (new seven rooms): where Hu Xueyan's children lived.
Hele Hall (old seven rooms): seven rooms wide, two floors. Upstairs is the bedroom of the concubines, downstairs is the public area.
😍The highlight: Zhiyuan, the main reason for my visit😍
The tallest building in Zhiyuan: Huijin Hall
Also called Yufeng Tower, named after Su Shi's poem "I want to ride the wind back", this building was also the tallest building in Hangzhou at that time. It is usually the place to watch operas, and the water platform opposite is the place for performances.
There is also the largest artificial cave in China hidden between the rockery downstairs.
Opposite the Yufeng Tower is a "Yanbitang" mahogany building, which is Hu Xueyan's own bedroom. There was an eight-treasure bed on the second floor, but it was more precious than the emperor's dragon couch.
There is a seven-star stove in the kitchen, which means seven stars shining.
The big vat in the yard: made of copper, rainwater collector (water storage, fire prevention)
The lower room is equipped with the most advanced "big phone" at that time, which is equivalent to the modern "telephone ☎️".
Yinglian Building: a reception area used to show off wealth. There are crystal lamps and two large mirrors🪞.
The amazing Nanmu Hall, the buildings are all made of precious golden nanmu! (It is said that it is where the most beloved Mrs. Luo Si lives)
▫️Why went bankrupt:
Betting with foreign merchants on raw silk led to a tight capital chain. The lifeline of Hu Xueyan's survival was his Fukang Money House, and the main customers of Fukang Money House were Qing officials.
But because of the failure of the bet, the news of the loss of 10 million taels leaked, and officials from all over the country ran a crazy run. As a result, Hu could not bear it and could only sell assets at a low price to pay off debts.
In the end, he was ordered by Empress Dowager Cixi to be dismissed and his family was confiscated. After Zuo Zongtang's death, Hu had no hope of making a comeback.
Folk legend has it that the reason why Hu Xueyan lost his family was related to the Feng Shui of the house. The northwest corner was originally the wealth position of the former residence, but it was missing a corner. It was originally a barber shop, and the family did not want to move away. Now this barber shop is the exit of Hu Xueyan's former residence.
▫️Hu Xueyan is most talked about for being kind and generous. He donated money for disaster relief, founded Hu Qingyu Tang, and saved the world.
Although his ending is regrettable, the good things he did will continue to be passed down.
