A Memorable (and Tiring!) Visit to the Great Wall of China
My recent trip to Beijing was initially planned for two days but extended to three due to work commitments. Though I’ve visited Beijing twice before in winter, I never managed to brave the cold to see the Great Wall—a dream of mine for years. This time, despite the scorching summer heat (early July!), I made sure to visit, and surprisingly, I did it on the very first day instead of saving it for last.
**Getting There: Taxi vs. Bus**
I had originally intended to take bus 877 from the station, but at the last moment, a taxi driver offered to take me to the **Badaling section** of the wall for 200 RMB. After some negotiation, he agreed on 100 RMB, with the condition that he’d take additional passengers. In the end, there were four of us sharing the ride, making it affordable. The journey took about **1 hour and 20 minutes**, and the driver dropped us right at the entrance.
**The Hike: Challenging but Worth It**
Visiting in summer meant **intense heat and sunburn risk**, so I’d strongly advise carrying water, sunscreen, and a hat. The hike itself is **strenuous**—steep steps, uneven paths, and no shade. If you’re bringing kids or aren’t used to physical activity, be prepared for a tough climb. That said, occasional cool breezes provided some relief, and the breathtaking views made every drop of sweat worth it.
**Ticket Options: Hiking vs. Chairlift**
- **Hiking only:** 40 RMB (entry fee)
- **Chairlift (one-way):** 140 RMB + 40 RMB entry = **180 RMB total**
I chose to hike, which was exhausting but rewarding. If you’re short on energy, the chairlift is a good alternative.
**Return Journey: Free Shuttle Bus**
On the way back, I took the **free shuttle bus** that drops you near a bus station. From there, you can either take a **public bus (15-20 RMB)** or a **taxi (~200 RMB, negotiable if shared)**.
**Pro Tip:**
Since the Great Wall visit **drains your energy**, it’s better to keep it for the **last day** of your trip. Doing it first (like I did) left me exhausted for the rest of my Beijing exploration!
**Final Thoughts**
Despite the heat and fatigue, standing on one of the **Seven Wonders of the World** was surreal. If you’re visiting Beijing, the Great Wall is a **must-see**—just plan wisely! #greatwall #great_wall #beijingtravel #badalinggreatwall
