Our mission on this trip is to soak in a private hot spring. ♨️Hyotan Onsen is a day trip hot spring. There are many programs to choose from and it is actually very popular among tour groups. When we went, there were many tour groups, but today we will only choose a private room!! A travelogue of four men visiting Fukuoka, covering Nagasaki, Yufuin, Beppu, and Fukuoka over 3 nights and 4 days. Nagasaki One unexpectedly delightful spot in Nagasaki was Huis Ten Bosch. The admission fee for adults is quite steep at 7,300 yen per day, but the interior is designed in a Dutch style, meticulously replicating the atmosphere of Europe rather than being hastily put together. It genuinely felt like being in Europe. When we visited, there were quite a few Japanese middle and high school students on what seemed to be school trips, indicating that this place is popular not only among Koreans but also locals. Besides, there are numerous attractions inside, and the beautifully blooming flowers made every step enjoyable. However, the price is a bit high; I’d consider revisiting if it were around 50,000 won. For dining in Nagasaki, I strongly recommend Katsushika. It’s a must-try. The gyukatsu, minced katsu, and hire katsu are delicious in that order. Hita The small town of Hita offers a subtle glimpse into the streets of old Japan. The rain added to the charm, making it a surprisingly memorable city. I highly recommend the cheese roll cake at Mameda Roll Sui Café. Yufuin Yufuin is so famous that it hardly needs an introduction. I recommend visiting the Ghibli Street there. Beppu Beppu is renowned for its hot springs. We only visited Umi Jigoku, but it was worth the admission fee. The weather also played a part in enhancing the experience. We went to Hyotan Onsen, and since it was the off-season, there weren’t many people. It features open-air baths, and the waterfall-like streams in one of the baths provided a full-body massage, which was fantastic. However, I was disappointed that the milk vending machine was out of stock, and there weren’t many milk vending machines installed in the first place. Fukuoka No matter where you go, Fukuoka is full of romance and great food. For yakitori, I recommend Torikawa Yaki Ku in Fukuoka. They have Korean menus, the staff are very friendly, and some of them speak a bit of Korean, making it a good place for beginners to try yakitori. Overall, the yakitori dishes were all delicious.

I started at the iconic Hells of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri), a surreal collection of hot spring “hells” too beautiful (and too hot) for bathing. From the vivid cobalt blue of Umi Jigoku to the crimson Chinoike Jigoku, each one had its own atmosphere, colors, and sounds—like walking through a gallery curated by nature itself. After exploring the "hells," I took a dip in a traditional sand bath in Beppu Beach. Buried up to my neck in naturally heated sand, with the ocean breeze on my face—it was oddly calming, and surprisingly detoxifying. The Kannawa district was my favorite to explore. Wooden inns and plumes of steam rising from every corner gave the streets a ghostly charm. I tried onsen-steamed cuisine, where vegetables, eggs, and even dumplings are cooked using hot spring steam. Simple, flavorful, and very local. In the evening, I relaxed in an open-air rotenburo, surrounded by rocks and greenery, with clouds of steam drifting into the starry sky. It was pure bliss. Best Time to Visit: Autumn (October–November) for cooler air and comfortable soaks, or winter for the ultimate contrast between cold nights and steaming baths. Helpful Tips: Try a variety of baths—mud, sand, steam, and mineral water all offer unique experiences. Bring a towel and coin purse—many baths are unmanned with small entry fees. Located in the mountains of Beppu, Hyotan Onsen in Kannawa has been awarded 3 Michelin stars for its cleanliness, ambience and traditional facilities. Hyotan Onsen has 3 indoor pools: Cypress, Rock and Cup baths which are warm and hot, and also a cold pool, which reduced fatigue. The is one outdoor pool also, facing the trees and encapsulated by natural rocks. The water from the pools comes from the local natural hot springs. There is also a steam bath. The waterfall pipe has an intense massaging pressure and can be relaxing to alleviate any pressure points. There is also a sand bath, where there are 2 temperatures, warm or hot and you are buried into the sand to relax, wearing the yakuta’s hired from the front desk. There are different prices for public baths and families, friends or couples can rent/ book a private Onsen to share the experience. There are onsen eggs to purchase which are cooed by the hot spring water. The Onsen facilities are great which includes shampoo, conditioner and body wash. There are also booths for drying your hair and there is a hairdryer in each booth. There is a restaurant, courtyard and restroom onsite. Bath towels can be rented. Hyoton Onsen Beppu Recommended for those who are not staying in Beppu or staying in Beppu but the accommodation does not have an onsen service and want to soak in an onsen. There is a public service. For those who rent a car, you can park your car and use the service. This place closes late. Come soak in the onsen and go back to sleep comfortably. Importantly, there are not many people late at night. We went around 10 pm. There will be staff to help you buy tickets. You will press the machine. When you enter, there are separate male and female areas. In addition, if anyone wants a private room, there is also one, but you may have to pay extra. #onsen #hotspring #japan #oita Open since 1922, Hyotan Onsen is one of Beppu’s top hot spring establishments AND the only 3-star Michelin onset in Japan. It features 100% free-flowing natural hot springs and possesses a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature, while offering one of the most varied and deep onsen experiences. It offers several types of hot springs pools (indoor, outdoor and private for families), but we just opted for the public indoor and outdoor experience. We went in December and was able to experience snow while bathing in the hot spring bath outside. It was such a soothing and relaxing experience. You can also pay for amenities such as toiletries and can buy some food/snacks. The entrance fee is very reasonable, 940yen which is around 7usd. The opening hours are from 9am to 1am. It is located in the center of Oita “Onsen Prefecture” and conveniently accessible. Only a 3 min. walk from Jigokubara bus stop. 25 min. ride on Oita Kotsu Bus bound for Kannawa from Beppu Station on JR Nippo Main Line.

Hyotan Onsen There are three indoor baths, a waterfall bath, two steam baths, and a separate sand bath. The one where you dig your own bath was fun 😂 The steam baths come in low and high temperatures, but the high temperature makes it painful to even breathe, so I recommend the low temperature. The hot springs are more concentrated at high temperatures. ♨️ There is a meal set plan that requires a reservation by the day before, which is a little cheaper than usual. Just hang your name tag outside while using it, and insert a coin into the machine and the hot spring water will come out right away.
