Historic buildings
The Imperial Ancestral Temple was first built in the 18th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1420), covering an area of 139,000 square meters. It was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties worshipped their ancestors. It has three walls and a three-story enclosed courtyard consisting of the front, middle and back halls. It is located in the southeast of the Forbidden City and together with Tiananmen Square and Sheji Altar, it forms the oriental capital pattern of "left to right for ancestors". The main buildings include the front hall (Xiang Hall), the middle hall (Qing Hall) and the back hall (Zhu Temple). Among them, the Xiang Hall is a building taller than the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City. It is majestically supported by three white marble platforms, and 68 giant golden nanmu pillars support the yellow glazed hip roof. The painted beams and rafters retain the green and blue tone of the Ming Dynasty. It can be regarded as a classic example of Chinese ancient architectural craftsmanship. Today, the Imperial Ancestral Temple has been transformed into the Cultural Palace of the Working People. The main hall has a permanent cultural relic exhibition, and the east and west side halls often hold special exhibitions of calligraphy and painting, continuing the historical weight in the cultural heritage. The red palace walls and the ancient pines and cypresses complement each other, and the gilded ginkgo avenue in autumn creates a quiet ancient style shooting scene. The South Square has become a place for Residents to do morning exercises, where Tai Chi stretches and Peking Opera singing blend together. When the morning light penetrates the carvings of the Lingxing Gate, the glazed red walls outline the silhouette of the building in the afternoon, and the oriental aesthetics that have been deposited for 600 years are reborn in the contemporary era.
