Stretch your legs and take in the spectacular views of Isle del Sol
From Copacabana to the Island of the Sun☀
Booked the boat the day before (35Bs one way)
- There are many signs saying Isle del Sol on the main street. We wanted to relax and had booked a hotel on the island, so we only booked one way.
There are two boarding and disembarking points, the north and south sides of the island.
We said we would go to the north side and return to the south the next day, but we were told that we could not purchase a round trip ticket and that we would have to buy the return ticket locally.
On the day
We had booked a 9am boat and headed to the designated location.
The boat departed about 5 minutes late.
The first half was fine with no waves, but the area around the south side of the island was quite shaky. I took motion sickness medicine just in case, which was a relief. I recommend motion sickness medicine.
Arrived on the north side of the island
It took about 2 hours to get to the north side
When we were about to walk, there was a line from the pier to the boat. I wondered what was going on, but it was a fee to use the north side of the island (15Bs). If you don't pay, you won't be allowed to land. We ended up starting to walk just before noon (11:45am).
Trekking
Not only was the view of the lake amazing, but along the way, we saw pigs sunbathing, donkeys, burros, sheep, cats, dogs and many other animals running about freely. The dogs were very docile. There are also 70 large and small ruins on the island. Your ticket will be checked several times along the way, so don't lose it. The altitude is nearly 4000m, so don't push yourself, take a deep breath and walk slowly. There are kiosks along the way where you can buy drinks and fruit, but the items are limited.
When you are stopped again halfway, you will be charged for the south side of the island (15Bs). I didn't understand at first because I went there without knowing, but it seems that the fee is charged separately for the north and south. There are ticket checking points here and there, and if you don't have a ticket, you will be stopped and forced to buy one.
If you walk a little way into the south side, you will find several restaurants. Many shops are closed during the off-season and have limited hours, so if they are open, you should go. The price is twice as much as Copacabana, but it's worth it because you can enjoy the spectacular view.
The view of the 6,000m-class mountains seen from the island in the evening is also spectacular. We booked a hotel where you can see the sunrise.
This island is really relaxing, and time flows slowly. There are no cars on the island and the air is clean. You can come here as a day trip from Copacabana, but it's a waste. I recommend taking your time and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
