Hakodate, this beautiful small city at the southern tip of Hokkaido, always captivates visitors from around the world with its unique charm. Here, you can immerse yourself in a rich historical atmosphere, savor fresh seafood, and admire breathtaking natural scenery. This trip to Hakodate allowed me to discover the city's distinctive romance and vibrant charm amidst the winter snowscapes.
1. Little Octopuses on Manhole Covers: The City's Unique Imprint
Walking through Hakodate's streets, you'll notice adorable little octopuses printed on the manhole covers. These octopuses either gaze curiously at the world with big eyes or stretch out their tentacles as if to hug passersby, adding a playful and lively touch to the city's streets. They seem like tiny guardians of Hakodate, silently witnessing the city's changes and the comings and goings of visitors. Every time I looked down and saw these little octopuses, I couldn't help but smile, feeling the city's warmth and whimsy.
2. Hakodate Cafés: Cozy Corners in Winter
Hakodate's coffee culture thrives, with cafés of various styles scattered throughout its streets. On a cold winter day, stepping into a cozy café, ordering a steaming cup of coffee, and sitting by the window to watch the snowflakes fall outside is an unparalleled delight. These cafés not only serve delicious coffee but also offer exquisite desserts and light meals. Sitting in a comfortable armchair, listening to soft music, and soaking in the warmth and tranquility indoors, time seems to slow down, and all fatigue and chill are dispelled.
3. Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses: A Blend of History and Modernity
The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses are one of Hakodate's iconic landmarks. Once a bustling trade center, they have now been transformed into a commercial district combining shopping, dining, and entertainment. The red brick architecture preserves the historical charm of the past, while the interiors brim with modern energy. Entering the Kanemori Warehouses feels like stepping through time, where the old and new blend seamlessly. You can browse unique shops, sample local delicacies, and enjoy various art exhibitions and performances. At night, the Kanemori Warehouses are even more enchanting, with the red brick buildings glowing under the lights, creating a stunning contrast with the distant Mount Hakodate.
4. Hakodate in the Snow: The Romance of Red Brick Warehouses
In winter, Hakodate is blanketed in snow, the entire city covered in a thick white layer, exuding serenity and peace. Amid this snowy landscape, the red brick warehouses stand out as the most captivating sight. During heavy snowfall, the roofs, walls, and ground of the warehouses are draped in white, forming a picturesque scene of red and white, like something out of a fairy tale. Strolling along the streets of the red brick warehouses, the snow crunches underfoot, and the surroundings are silent except for the dancing snowflakes. This tranquil and romantic atmosphere makes you feel as if you've stepped into a dreamy world, leaving all worries behind.
