If you are interested in Japanese porcelain and pottery, you must pay a visit to Arita in the western part of Saga prefecture in Kyushu. This is the town where porcelain clay was first found in Japan and craftsmen have been making porcelain here for over 300 years. While the main streets of the town is lined with shops selling Arita ware, there are a few historic places and museums worth seeing. My first stop was the Sueyama Shrine just off the main street. The big tori by the entrance is covered with blue and white tiles that are identifiable to Arita porcelain! There are also many large size porcelain vases on the shrine premise which make this shrine different from other shrines in Japan. Just 10 minutes walk away is the Kyushu Ceramic Museum which is on a small slope. It is quite a large museum and has a big parking just outside. Entrance and parking are both free. There are four main halls and rooms and will need about about hour to see the exhibits. I thought the most interesting piece was the large ceramic clock will sound every 30 minutes with rolling balls and moving figurines going up and down. Another interesting place to check out is the Arita Porcelain Park which is about 5 minutes drive from the Main Street. It is a big park with a building that follows that of Zwinger Palace in Germany. It is definitely not what you would expect to see in Japan’s countryside. While it is called a porcelain park, there is not much here relating to porcelain other than the Arita Pottery Workshop- where we saw most of the visitors that day. It is free to visit and there is a large souvenir shop and restaurant near the entrance. Since it is so close to the town center, you can definitely make a stop here. Arita also hosts one of the largest ceramic fair annually in early May during the Golden Week holiday. The Arita Porcelain Park is a small park located in Arita town, Saga Prefecture, Japan. It is a recreation of a traditional German village, and is located just on the outskirts of Arita on the road to Hasami. Unfortunately, Covid outbreak made the theme park looking more lonely and gloomy. Nevertheless, it is still a beautiful park and good for photography. The park has a studio where visitors can try making procelain, even for kids. And it was my first time seeing such a special stepwise kiln. #littlegermany

Suyama Shrine in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture⛩ I didn't notice it when I looked up from below, but when I went up the stairs, there was a torii gate made of pottery😲!!! The lion statues were also made of pottery, and there was pottery everywhere. It's a town of pottery, as you would expect. When I went there, the leaves were falling, so the contrast between red and blue was also good✨ I bet the snow scenery in winter is also beautiful♩ And it's a mysterious shrine where the train comes in right next to it. There are no barriers, and the train goes right in front of you, really in front of you, which is a little scary🥶💦 You can also take pictures of the train tracks, which you would never be able to take pictures of normally. It is a a full-size reconstruction of Germany's Zwinger Palace, which is a spectacular example of German baroque architecture. There is a paid porcelain museum in its right wing. Like Arita, Dresden is famous for its local porcelain, Meissen Porcelain, produced not far from the city. The displays inside the palace and park provide insight into the influence of Arita porcelain on European designs. In the park grounds there is a studio where visitors can try making porcelain, and tours of a sake, shochu (Japanese liquor), and beer brewery. Opening hours: 10am to 4pm daily. You will definitely have a deep understanding of the history of Arita after visiting. This museum was built in 1874 as a stone warehouse of pottery, and the building itself is a traditional structure. It . It was due to the discovery of kaolin stone at this site which is the raw material used to make porcelain clay. This has made Arita developed into a prosperous center of porcelain production. In the meantime, there is no longer any active mining at the quarry, and you can view the exposed rocks from a nearby observation area. It provides a huge range of displays and information. The museum covers the history of ceramics on all of Kyushu, not just Arita. On an outer wall of the building are 25 large ceramic bells given to the museum by the German city of Meissen, the sister city of the town of Arita. One shortsides is that most of the information is provided in Japanese so might need some translation. Arita Town in Saga Prefecture is famous for its pottery! There is a huge and magnificent palace here that makes you feel like you're overseas! This is "Arita Porcelain Park". It was so overwhelming that I was surprised! It would have been even better if we could have gone inside the palace, but unfortunately we can't. But it's a surreal space, so it's worth it just to go and see the building! There are also other places to experience pottery and souvenir shops in Arita Porcelain Park!
