Murud-Janjira: The Invincible Sea Fort That Defied Time

Hidden off the Konkan coast, where the Arabian Sea kisses the shores of Maharashtra, stands Murud-Janjira, a sea fort like no other. My visit to this mighty marine fortress was nothing short of surreal—imagine a castle in the middle of the ocean, unreachable by land, surrounded by waves that crash in salute.
Built in the 15th century by African-origin Siddis, Janjira remains one of India’s few unconquered forts. Even the mighty Marathas and the British couldn’t bring it down. As I stepped onto the small sailboat from Rajapuri village, the wind whispered tales of legendary resistance and naval strategy. The short boat ride, with sea spray and cries of seagulls, felt like a time-travel portal.
What blew me away was how intact the fort still is. Inside, you’ll find massive cannons like Kalaal Baangdi and Chavri, freshwater ponds, and ruins of palaces and mosques that echo with history. Standing on its high bastions, I looked out at the limitless sea, imagining the view centuries ago when guards watched for invaders from the same spot.
But what touched me most was how nature and history coexist here. Sea breeze brushing against ancient walls, moss growing over stones, and waves that have endlessly lapped the fort for over 500 years—it’s hauntingly beautiful.
Best time to visit? October to March. Avoid monsoon, as boat rides are suspended and the sea can get rough. Mornings are ideal for exploring before the sun gets harsh.
Bonus Tips:
Reach Murud town from Alibaug or Roha, both well-connected.
Stay overnight at a beachside homestay in Murud for a peaceful sunset view.
Nearest railway station: Roha (40 km).
Don’t forget to carry cash—local boats don’t accept cards.
This isn’t just a tourist spot—it’s a living legend floating on the sea.
