The original name of the Penha Church was Capela de Nossa Senhora da Penha (Portuguese: Capela de Nossa Senhora da Penha). "Penha" means rock on the sea in Portuguese.[1] The Guia Church is named after the fact that it is built on the top of Guia Hill in Macau. The site of the Guia Church originally housed the Guia Hill Fort, which was built in 1622 (the second year of the reign of Emperor Tianqi in the Ming Dynasty) to defend against Dutch invasion.
