Go to Kasukabe Station on the Tobu Line and then Minami-Sakurai Station on the Tobu Noda Line. It took less time than I thought to get to the station, and I was able to get there in under an hour. (I started at Nippori Station.) The problem is how to get from the station to the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel. There are buses, but they are very few, so you can take a taxi, or if you're confident in your stamina, you can walk. In my case, I took a bus when I went there and walked to the station on the way back. I don't recommend walking in the summer. The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel requires a reservation. You can make a reservation by phone or online, and it seems to be available from 9am to 4:30am. The photo shoot is underground, so the temperature drops quite a bit, so if you're sensitive to the cold inside, you should prepare a jacket. If you take the train about an hour from Tokyo, there is a place called Kasukabe, which is the background of the anime Crayon Shin-chan. As it is a small city, the overall atmosphere of the neighborhood is quiet and relaxed. I happened to find a cafe while walking around, and it was a cafe that roasted coffee itself. The entrance was filled with the rich smell of roasted coffee, and they had a variety of specialty coffees, so it was great. The staff were very friendly, unlike people who are tired of tourists in big cities. When I asked for a coffee recommendation, they asked me in detail about my taste and the strength I wanted. The menu was difficult because the descriptions were all in Japanese except for the names of the menu items, but I was so grateful that they explained each item in English. I ordered homemade cheesecake and homemade gateau chocolate cake, and they were really delicious. There was also a meal menu, but we just had a light coffee and left. The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, commonly known as the Underground Temple, was built in Kasukabe, Saitama in 2006. It was built to protect Kasukabe and the greater Tokyo area from flooding caused by heavy rains, and is open to the public when not in operation (reservations required). 59 gigantic columns, each 2m wide, 7m deep, 18m tall, and weighing 500 tons, stand underground, creating a fantastical sight that is just like the Parthenon or the underground temples of Turkey. The temperature inside is kept at around 20°C in summer and around 10°C in winter, making it a great spot for a cool feeling in the summer, as it feels like you're in a natural air conditioner!
