Located in Tangshan, Hetou Old Street is the best place in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to experience the Tang Dynasty. Hetou Old Street is located in Tangshan City. It is very convenient to drive from Beijing/Tianjin or take the high-speed rail. Spend a weekend and travel back to the Tang Dynasty. This was originally the head of two artificial canals in Tangshan City, the Meihe River and the Tangjin Canal, hence the name "Hetou Town". The Meihe River was excavated in 1881 and was the first lifeline for transporting coal from the Kaiping Mine. During the canal's heyday, merchants gathered here and it was a prosperous place. Unfortunately, it later declined, leaving behind a Chinatown. After a ten-year hiatus, the area has been transformed into an old town with a Tang Dynasty theme, which is now Hetou Old Street. As for why Tangshan is building Tang culture, it is related to the name of Tangshan. It is said that when Emperor Taizong of Tang led an expedition to Goryeo, he stationed troops on a mountain north of Tangshan. i got to teach in China last 2019 and only got to stay there for four months. I haven't actually explored much of the country except on the weekends and holidays. It was in Tangshan City in Hebei Province that I got the job. The city isn't as popular as Beijing and Shanghai but the city is known for its Nanhu Lake Park which I posted previously. We are only an hour away from Beijing for a train ride and 3 hours for a bus ride. How I wish I could get back and experience the other two seasons of the year---the spring and summer. Free admission in late November - crowded but worth it! Tried chess-piece pancakes and Tang Xiaobao yogurt (kids loved it!) 2️⃣Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park + Museum Free, no reservation needed. Outdoor memorial wall with victims' names and quake ruins - remaining machine workshop structures and twisted rails are profoundly moving! Museum showcases earthquake history and Tangshan's reconstruction. What a heroic city! 3️⃣Shadow Puppet Theme Park (Must for kids!) Free, requires reservation. Numerous children's play facilities. Kids rode the Dragon Train, shadow puppet carousel, operated mini excavators, and laughed at funhouse mirrors - didn't want to leave! 4️⃣Nanhu Park. Free admission Vast lake area formed from post-quake subsidence, shimmering waters with panoramic views. International Garden section is most photogenic📷 - especially Hungary and Italy gardens. Tangshan - a heroic city rich in shadow puppetry, Pingju opera, and Leting drum culture, embodying modern industrial history.
