St. Jacob's Cathedral is the greatest work of the Croatian Renaissance, built between 1431 and 1536. The original design was to build a simple church with a nave, but later a transept, a semicircular dome, an inner hall, and a baptistery were added. The ancient building's dome has a decorative band of 74 half-portraits. The entire church is built of limestone and marble from the island of Brač.
