#AutumnTrip ⁣While driving around Hita, we stopped off at Mizube no Sato Oyama Roadside Station to buy souvenirs. The rain last night must have been quite heavy. On the final morning of our stay at Sanso Tensui, I woke up at 6:00 AM to use the restroom. By 7:00 AM, I was ready to soak in the private open-air bath attached to our room. However, when I tried to turn on the lights, the switch only made clicking sounds, and no light came on. It wasn’t just the lights in our room—Wi-Fi, TV, and everything else were out. It was a power outage. Upon investigating further, we realized the outage wasn’t limited to our room; the entire facility was affected. There was no point in panicking, so I decided to enjoy the open-air bath. Thankfully, the hot spring water was still flowing. Even after an hour, there was no sign of the power returning. My husband took out a flashlight from the closet and checked how the automatic toilet was functioning. Since we had a private bath in our room, we decided to use the hot spring water to flush the toilet manually. While I was flustered, my husband calmly demonstrated his military survival skills. At breakfast, I noticed that none of the Japanese guests had brought flashlights; they were likely using their smartphone lights. My husband was curious about how guests without private baths managed their toilets and suggested I ask them. Of course, I couldn’t bring myself to ask such a question. Despite the darkness, breakfast was served as usual. The staff prepared everything efficiently, which made me think power outages might be common here. However, during checkout, they explained that the four-hour outage from 6:30 AM was unprecedented and apologized for the inconvenience. No one seemed angry about having breakfast in the dark. The only disappointment was not being able to visually enjoy the beautifully presented dishes. The pickles were so delicious that I almost went for a second serving of rice. The breakfast was so perfect despite the lack of lighting that the only regret was not being able to use the coffee machine. I hesitantly asked if it was possible to have coffee, and the staff kindly offered to prepare drip coffee if I could wait. I gratefully accepted. The staff must have had a challenging morning relying on their smartphone lights, yet they managed to smoothly serve breakfast to three rounds of guests. In the end, the power outage made us appreciate the excellence of the inn even more. We left with a strong desire to return for another stay.

I love staying multiple nights wherever I go, but my expectations for meals tend to decrease the longer I stay. However, Sansou Tansui proved to be different. First of all, the presentation was completely different. Just by changing from yesterday's hassun to three types of appetizers, the dishes felt entirely new. With a touch of summer added, everything was refreshing and perfect for blowing away the fatigue of a hot day. The Nishinoseki 'Bigin' sake from Kayashima Brewery that I ordered was smooth and paired wonderfully with the meal. And today, they served tuna nigiri as part of the sashimi! What a delightful surprise. I hadn't planned on eating sushi during this trip, so this unexpected treat made me incredibly happy. The grilled young sweetfish was delicious again today. Personally, I preferred the dinner on the second day. According to the staff, there has been an increase in foreign guests opting for extended stays recently. This seems to have led to some thoughtful innovations, which turned out to be lucky for me. Since this trip has been all about indulging, being able to enjoy small portions of delicious food is the greatest joy.

#EnjoyJapan Breakfast at Sanso Tensui in Hita, Oita Prefecture. I think the best part of a ryokan is the breakfast. Is it really okay to fill your stomach this much in the morning? There are so many side dishes to go with the rice that even though I had a big dinner, I still had seconds of rice in the morning. It's not flashy, but it has a lot of simple flavors and is comforting. ・ I thought the same thing at dinner yesterday, but all the pickles are delicious. ・ First thing in the morning, I made a reservation for the family bath. There are five family baths, so I used Yamayu, which was recommended by the Korean staff member who checked me in yesterday. ・ In the morning, I went to Kamayu, which was recommended by the front desk. The Kamayu had a jacuzzi, and I felt like I was in a boiling pot of ginseng chicken soup. ・ The view was great, with a river flowing alongside the family bath, and the hot spring jacuzzi was also great, so I ended up going to Kamayu twice.

Sansou Tansui, located in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, is a highly-rated inn in Kyushu. Dinner started with a surprising welcome from irises, which was quite unexpected. The sashimi and young sweetfish were particularly delicious. While the dishes were not extravagant, each one was carefully prepared, and the flavors were excellent. The overall satisfaction was high, and the private dining room allowed us to enjoy our time at a relaxed pace. There was a special set for comparing three types of Oita's local junmai sake, offering a delightful experience of tasting both dry and sweet varieties from the region. Even for someone like me who doesn't usually drink, it was a pleasant way to discover a favorite sake. I somehow managed to make it to the sukiyaki course, but my stomach was absolutely full.

I decided to travel to Hita because I wanted to stay at Sansou Tansui. After seeing a video thumbnail describing it as the highest-rated inn in Kyushu, I became curious about why this ryokan was chosen by so many people instead of popular destinations like Yufuin, Beppu, or Kurokawa Onsen. ・Upon entering the parking lot, even though it was before the 3:00 PM check-in time, the staff were already waiting and promptly helped carry our heavy suitcases. During our stay, the staff's attentiveness was seamless and made us feel very comfortable. ・The inn has five private family baths that can be reserved anytime if available, with a 45-minute usage limit per session. Following the recommendation of the Korean staff member who handled our check-in, we tried the "Yama-yu" bath. It was a charming bath made with stones brought from the mountains, offering a view of the river flowing right beside it. ・Even if you're not staying overnight, you can rent the family baths separately. Highly recommended.

📍Location: Sanso Tensui 💰Price per person: 32,000 yen (as of 2023) I wanted to relax! I wanted to eat in my room! I also wanted to enjoy the bar! So I chose the quiet Sanso Tensui inn deep in the mountains. It was exactly what I wanted, the foot bath was comfortable, the food was delicious, the drinks were delicious, and the bar was quiet and had a nice atmosphere, so it was an inn that I felt was worth more than what I had paid for. You can reserve the bath for private use, and I was very satisfied just being at this inn without sightseeing. I recommend it for a time to relax and indulge in a little luxury after your daily fatigue⏳
