The excitement at Spun didn’t end with the waterfall. We headed to the next stop on the tour, Spun Old Street, which had a truly unique charm. There was an actual train line running through the middle of the town, and the shops lined up on both sides were amazing. It was a place where the tension of not knowing when the train would arrive and the energy of tourists strangely blended together. The biggest reason we came here was to experience flying lanterns. My friends and I each took one side of a large lantern and wrote our wishes on it. As we wrote our wishes one by one with a brush, I felt more sincere. The store staff took pictures of us cheerfully and helped us light them and release them into the sky. We all watched the lanterns with our wishes rise into the night sky, and prayed for our wishes to come true. If you visit Spun, I highly recommend you try flying lanterns. We left Spun and headed to Jiufen, one of the places I was most looking forward to on this trip. By the time we arrived, the sun had already set, and Jiufen was filled with waves of red lanterns. With the rain falling steadily, it felt like we had entered a scene from a movie. The famous Sucilou stairs were, as expected, packed with people, but even that chaos felt like part of Jiufen’s charm. It was fun to walk up and down the narrow stairs with an umbrella, look at the shops, and float along the crowd. We briefly escaped the crowds and went into a tea house with a nice view. After ordering a cup of warm tea, we looked out the window, and the night view of Jiufen, sparkling in the rain, came into view. The lights of the shops along the black mountainside, like jewels, and the sea in the distance were truly an unrealistically beautiful sight. It was a moment when I immediately understood why so many people talk about the night view of Jiufen. We left the fantastic scenery of Jiufen behind and returned to downtown Taipei. The night view of the city created by the gorgeous and tall buildings welcomed us, but the hazy scenery of Jiufen, which was filled with red lights, lingered in my mind for a long time. We went to Shifen, about an hour's drive from Taipei, to fly our classic lanterns! We all rented a taxi for the day, so it was easy to get around. It's impossible to travel by train and bus with children. 💦 Even if we rented it for the whole day, it was about 30,000 yen for 8 people (including 2 children)! The taxi driver showed us the company, and we were off to fly our lanterns! The price was 250 NTD (about 1,200 yen) for 4 colors (4 wishes)! It was already a fun event, even from writing with an unfamiliar brush 🥰 The other family members had 8 colors, so it seemed like it was hard to think of anything lol After we finished writing our wishes, the shop staff guided us to the tracks. First, from 8:00, I took the Taiwan Railway TDR from Ximen to Taipei Station, a local line to Hualien, and got off at Badu Station.
