Shenquan Garden is a Shingon sect temple of Toji Temple located in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The main deity, Saint Avalokitesvara, Kaiji (founder) is Kukai. Located to the south of Nijo Castle, it is a garden created by Emperor Kombu in the Heian period of Japan after he moved his capital to Kyoto. Legend has it that Gen Yoshitsune and Shizuo Mae met. Shenquan Garden was originally a forbidden garden in Heian Jingda. It is a large-scale garden, and it is also said to be the first garden in Kyoto. It is mainly a place for the emperor and nobles to play. In addition to the large pond in the center, there are also natural landscapes such as small rivers and forests. But it was abandoned after the Kamakura period (12th-14th century). During the Meiji period, it flourished again as a dojo for Shingon sect. Today's Shenquan Garden is well-preserved, small and exquisite.
