Yangzhou two-day one-night citywalk Day 1: The high-speed train arrived at Yangzhou East Station around 2 PM. We took a bus to Zhenyuan and reached the city center, then went to Dongguan Street for some shopping and eating. Dongguan Street is connected to Caiyi Street, both of which are quite commercialized. Yangzhou doesn't have a subway, but there are many shared electric bikes, which are not only convenient but also allow you to enjoy the scenery along the way. Just make sure to park the bike in designated areas. We checked in at Siwang Pavilion, which is a pavilion on the road, took a photo, and continued to Renfengli Cultural Street, a small artistic street. Then we went to Pishi Street, which has many cultural and creative shops and food stores. The Yangzhou landmark check-in is here. You can stroll slowly on Pishi Street, and it looks great at night. After Pishi Street, we went to Guanxiang. I heard there is a nice small paper coffee shop, but unfortunately, it was closed when we arrived. Then we checked into Jinji Hotel near Slender West Lake, which is an apartment-style hotel with good value for money. The half-day itinerary was roughly Dongguan Street - Caiyi Street - Siwang Pavilion - Renfengli - Pishi Street - Guanxiang. We ate stinky tofu, Yangda yogurt, hot dry silk, and shrimp wontons, all of which tasted good. We had made a reservation for the Grand Canal Museum in advance. Day 2: The time planning was a bit unreasonable. Going to Slender West Lake late really affected the experience. It was crowded and hot, which completely ruined the mood. The smart arrangement should be to arrive at Slender West Lake around 6-7 AM (it opens at 6:00, you can have a light snack to fill your stomach), enter from the south gate and exit from the west gate. You can pass by classic spots like the Twenty-Four Bridge, White Pagoda, and Fishing Terrace. A leisurely stroll takes about three hours, just in time to leave when the crowd increases around 9-10 AM. If you want to experience a boat ride, you can take a manually rowed boat back to the south gate. Personally, I don't think it's cost-effective. The ticket for Slender West Lake is 95, and the boat ride is 1000 per boat, with a maximum of 10 people. It takes a long time to gather enough people. After leaving Slender West Lake, we went directly to Yechun Teahouse (the one by the pier) for breakfast. Get a ticket at the entrance first. If you want a better dining environment, tell the staff you want to wait for a lakeside hall, not the hall in another building. You can walk around and take photos while waiting. The surroundings have a strong Jiangnan feel. Just be mindful not to spend too much time taking photos. For breakfast, we had several signature dishes: crab roe soup dumplings (a bit fishy, not very fond of it), five-ingredient buns, steamed dumplings, thousand-layer oil cake, and jade shumai, costing around 70-80. Then we went to the Grand Canal Museum, which has 11 halls, each with a different theme. It takes about three to four hours to visit all of them, and it's definitely worth a visit. The boat experience and the seasonal exhibition of the Potala Palace were quite impressive. Then we returned to the city center. The afternoon light was just right, so we rode bikes around the small streets and alleys, such as Jushi Lane, Sian Office, Meihua Academy (closed for renovation when we visited), and Ganquan Road. The city center of Yangzhou is quite similar to Suzhou, with many old residential houses. This gives the small streets and alleys a more lively atmosphere. Since Suzhou has many gardens, we didn't visit any gardens in Yangzhou this time. On the way back, the driver mentioned that the styles of Yangzhou gardens and Suzhou gardens are different. Yangzhou gardens were built by salt merchants and are more luxurious and flamboyant. Also, the scenery at the Guest House is beautiful, so we'll leave it for next time.
