📍Phnom Penh | A thrilling historical journey 🇰🇭
When you come to Cambodia, it’s not just Angkor Wat that’s worth visiting. The historical sites in Phnom Penh are also worth visiting. This time I visited the S-21 Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields to experience firsthand the darkest page in Cambodia’s modern history.
☠ Genocide Museum (S-21 Tuol Sleng)
🏛 This was originally a school, which was converted into a prison during the Khmer Rouge period (1975-1979), where thousands of innocent people were tortured. There are still black-and-white photos of victims, interrogation rooms, iron beds and torture instruments on the walls, and the atmosphere is very heavy.
🔹 Visiting experience: It is recommended to rent guided headphones or hire a local guide to understand the story more deeply. The atmosphere in the museum is solemn, and primitive torture instruments are still displayed in many rooms, which makes people shudder.
📌 Ticket price: $5 USD (extra charge for tour guide headphones)
📌 Recommended time: 1.5-2 hours
☠ The Killing Fields, Choeung Ek
🚗 It’s about 30-40 minutes’ drive from the city. This is where the Khmer Rouge executed their victims, and tens of thousands of people were killed here. There is a white pagoda in the park, which contains the skulls of the victims to remind people not to forget this history.
🔹 Visiting experience:
🎧 It is recommended to use the audio guide (available in Chinese), which tells the stories of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge and the survivors, which is very shocking. Walking among the woods and seeing the land that was once a mass grave, you can really feel the weight of history.
📌 Ticket price: $6 USD (including audio guide)
📌 Recommended time: 1-2 hours
