If you go through the Osaka Tunnel in Ohgago, Hachijojima, Hachijo-machi, Tokyo, towards the city, you will come to an observation spot where you can see Hachijo Kojima and Hachijo Fuji. There is space to park your car or motorcycle on the side of the road, so if you have time, it is worth stopping and taking in the view. Most people probably get there by car or bus, but I walked from the airport in the morning, climbed Higashiyama (Miharayama), saw Oike and Koike ponds, then looked around Karataki waterfall, and then walked all the way back to the city to arrive there. You can also get there by boat from Shibaura Pier in about half a day. This time, I went by plane. I thought it was closer and more convenient than Okinawa. Hachijojima is just a 55-minute flight from Haneda Airport. While there is also a ferry option, flying is incredibly convenient. The flight is so short that even offering drink service is challenging, so passengers are given bottled water instead. While renting a car is a good option, I chose to rent an electric bike (E-bike) to explore the island. The island is full of nature, with stunningly beautiful seas. There’s even a ranch with cows, and I enjoyed lunch at Paradiso, where they serve pizza made with Hachijojima cheese. For drinks, I had lemonade made from locally grown Hachijojima lemons. At another shop, I tried soft serve ice cream made from Hachijojima cow’s milk—it was absolutely delicious. The island offers plenty of gourmet delights. When it comes to the sea, the sunset and sunrise views are breathtaking. These spots are truly stunning. Additionally, there are several hot springs on the island, so be sure to take a dip in one of them. Being so close to Tokyo, Hachijojima is an easy and highly recommended getaway. Many accommodations offer shuttle services to and from the airport, and I also used one of these services.

If you want to try Hachijojima's specialties, I recommend Akakokko, an airport restaurant. I ordered the "Island Fish Set" without hesitation from the many menus. The main dish is mixed fries (flying fish croquettes, bluefin tuna fries, flying fish satsumaage). It's hot and crispy and definitely delicious. The soup is flying fish meatballs and local seaweed. The rice is seaweed rice 🍚, and underneath the generous amount of local seaweed, there are layers of rice, bonito flakes, and rice. It's just like my mother's nori bento. The wasabi served on the edge of the bowl can be added with soy sauce to taste. Everything is super delicious, and it's a set menu where you can't tell which is the main ingredient. It is also relatively unpopular compared to many places in Tokyo. But if you like landscape photography, want freedom, and don’t want to take pictures of only heads of people, this place is definitely suitable for you. transportation: 1: Plane ✈️ (55 minutes) - ANA has three flights a day between Hachijo Island and Haneda Airport 2: Ship 🛳️ (about 10 hours) - Tokai Kisen departs from Takeshiba Pier once a day at 22:30 suggestion: 1. Set out on a boat 🛳️, and arrive at around 8:55 the next morning after a good night's sleep, which saves one day of accommodation. Take the bus 🚌- There are three bus lines on the island that shuttle between the airport, the pier, major attractions and even hot springs, but Google Maps lacks information. Photography spots (too many to count, just a few to mention) 1: Nanhara Senjo Rocks - The volcanic geology formed by lava flowing out to the sea after the eruption of Hachijo Fuji. In addition, it is located to the west, which is definitely the best choice for sunset (dusk time is recommended) 2: Hachijo Fuji - The highest mountain on Hachijo Island, an active volcano with well-developed hiking trails.
