Wat Pa Sak: Explore the Lanna-style Pagoda
🙏 Wat Pa Sak was established by King Saen Phu, the third ruler of Chiang Mai from the Mangrai Dynasty and the grandson of King Mangrai, around the year 1930 B.E.
🙏 The temple houses a relic of the Buddha, specifically the right ankle bone (Kopphaka relic), which was brought by Phra Phutthakhosacharn from the city of Pataliputra.
🌳 The king also ordered the planting of 300 teak trees around the temple, hence the name Wat Pa Sak. He appointed Phra Phutthakhosacharn as the Supreme Patriarch to reside at this temple.
🛕 The most significant ancient structure is the principal pagoda with a bell-shaped top, 8 meters wide and 12.5 meters high, adorned with intricate stucco designs crafted by master artisans.
🏚 Wat Pa Sak is an important ancient site in Chiang Saen, known for its beautiful stucco work from the early Lanna period.
The notable features within the temple include:
🏚 The Viharn (main hall), which has a rectangular plan with a front porch, built with laterite and brick covered with plaster. It has 8 laterite columns covered with plaster. Inside the viharn, there is a raised platform at the rear for the principal Buddha image. Currently, only the base remains.
🛕 The Lanna-style pagoda with five spires remains in excellent condition, showcasing a blend of Sukhothai, Bagan, and Hariphunchai art, creating a unique architectural style of Wat Pa Sak's principal pagoda.
🛕 Surrounding the pagoda on all four sides are Buddha images alternating with angel niches, featuring stucco Buddha images in the 'Opening the World' posture. The niches are double-layered and decorated with beautiful stucco designs.
🏡 The temple grounds are serene and cool, perfect for strolling and admiring the beauty of the temple and its structures, which have been excavated and restored by the Fine Arts Department.
🛕 The pagoda, in particular, is a significant and well-preserved sacred site in Chiang Saen, withstanding the test of time.
