Zuiganji Temple is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in 828, and during the Kamakura period it became a Rinzai Zen temple with Hoshin Shosai, who had traveled to Song China, as its founding priest. The founder of the domain, Date Masamune, began construction of the temple in 1604, and it took five years to complete, in 1609.
