Crazy burial rites at Lake Toba
The burial practices around Lake Toba are a bit mind-blowing. The Batak people have unique rites and family tomb has a few levels.
When someone new in the family dies, their body is placed on the lowest level, while older family members are moved up to higher levels.
On the top level, only bones are kept, piled together. And what's interesting - they are Christians.
It’s a cultural experience that’s both eerie and beautiful, making you think about life, death, and family in a new way.
One more interesting thing to note is that such tombs a randomly scattered around the entire Samosir island, rather than be accumulated at one place like a cemetery.

Green and very wide grassland. Because it is so wide, many animals such as buffalo roam freely here. On top of the peak there is a church. Not far from there is also a lake on the lake is not too big but the beautiful scenery can be very pleasing to the eye. Feels like being in a movie, a very refreshing view. Running on the soft grass adds to the excitement. Very suitable for a place to relax from daily activities.
Discover the Serene Beauty of Lake Toba in Indonesia
Lake Toba is the name of a beautiful lake on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. There is an island in the lake called Samosir Island.
It is an island with a large Christian population, where there are few food restrictions and you can enjoy your time freely. I had a great time experiencing the traditional houses and food of the Batak people who have lived on the island for a long time.
It is a place rich in nature and was a bit cooler than other parts of Indonesia. There are also plenty of water activities, so it seems like a fun place to go with family and friends!
Since there are few transportation options to the island, it's a good idea to check the bus schedule or taxi stands before you go. I went from Silangit Airport, but I ended up taking a taxi because I couldn't find the bus stop.
A fascinating glimpse into Batak Heritage
a tourist destination at this beautiful island of samosir in lake toba indonesia is the huta siallagan is a must-visit for anyone exploring Lake Toba and Samosir Island. The traditional Batak village offers an intriguing window into the culture, traditions, and history of the Batak people.
One of the village's main attractions is the ancient stone chairs and execution table, which served as a site for royal meetings and traditional judgment rituals. The site is accompanied by detailed explanations, often provided by friendly local guides, making the history come alive.
Huta Siallagan also features stunning examples of traditional Batak architecture, with intricately carved wooden houses and vibrant motifs. The preservation efforts are commendable, allowing visitors to step back in time and imagine life centuries ago.
The village is very tourist-friendly, with opportunities to watch cultural performances, purchase local crafts, and interact with the residents. The environment is clean and picturesque, surrounded by lush scenery and close to the shores of Lake Toba. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone interested in Indonesia’s diverse heritage.

🇮🇩 Lake Toba: Parapat to Samosir by ferry
#2024wish
I spent one night at Gapura Hotel in Parapat, a small town in North Sumatra on the edge of Lake Toba, before taking a ferry to Samosir Island. As a solo backpacker, transport is an issue when there is no public transport or ride hailing services like Grab and Gojek in Lake Toba area. As my hotel was about 5 km from the ferry terminal, I asked the front desk of Gapura Hotel if they could send me to the ferry terminal. Thankfully the staff was kind enough to send me to the terminal on motorbike. I offered to pay but the staff refused.
There are a few ferry terminals in Parapat offering ferry services to different locations in Samosir Island. The hotel staff dropped me off at the newly built Pelabuhan Ajibata. The new ferry terminal seemed to offer higher-end ferry services to tourists and I was told that there was no ferry available that day. The staff I approached at the new ferry terminal directed me to a small port next to it. That's the port where locals take local ferries to and fro Samosir.
And so I boarded the local ferry from Pelabuhan Ajibata to Tomok (Rp 12,000). The ferry runs regularly so there is no need to buy tickets in advance. The ferry conductor will collect ticket fees from the passengers one by one.
The ferry looked quite old and rundown but no complaints since the fare was so cheap. There was no air-conditioning too. There were also vendors selling snacks on the ferry.
I sat at the open deck to immerse myself in the beauty of Lake Toba and took lots of pictures! It's definitely an eye-opening experience for me. One should try to take the local ferry instead of the premium ferry for a truly local experience in Lake Toba regions!
