On our recent trip to Japan we visited a number of busy cities and we wanted to have a couple of days out and Mount Koya was a great choice. It took us a couple of hours and a number of train rides to get there but it was absolutely worth it. A very tranquil little town Koyasan was set among centuries old pine forests and the quiet Buddhist temples and serene setting was just what we needed to take a break from the neon lights. All the notable sights are within walking distance and the air is so clear you would be silly not to take leisurely strolls around the parks and the beautiful Okunoin cemetery. A tourist office in the heart of town can provide you more information on the sights and important events. This is one of the most spiritual places in Japan. Not yet part of the standard tourist trip in Japan but it’s worth a visit. I suggest to sleep in a temple to really feel the atmosphere of the place. #givethanks #givethanks

Located in a remote wooded area of Wakayama Prefecture, south of Kyoto and Osaka, Koyasan (as it is called in Japanese) is the headquarters of the Shingon school of Buddhism, and home to more than 100 temples and monasteries.

Mount Koyasan is a magical place, high in the mountains about 2 hours by train from Osaka. It is the “headquarters” of Shinto Buddhism, which gives it a very peaceful atmosphere. You can sleep in a local temple and enjoy a vegetarian meal, see the photo for a feel of how many different dishes. Tip: after dinner take a walk through town, even more serene and in my opinion an unforgettable experience.

When visiting Japan for the first time (and for me, it was also my first major solo trip), it's crucial not to get lost in the desire to see as many places as possible and to take a break from the urban chaos. Mount Koya (Koya-san) is perfect for this. 📅 Itinerary (I traveled from Osaka to Tokyo, leaving around 9 AM, and still couldn't see everything I wanted): Day 1: The journey from Osaka takes about 2.5 hours. First, get from your hotel to Namba. While you can buy individual tickets, it's not necessary. It's better to purchase a combined ticket at Namba (to Koya-san and back—if you're heading to Tokyo the next day, you'll need to return anyway since Shinkansen trains depart from Namba). The ticket also includes unlimited bus rides in Koya-san and perks like souvenir coupons and discounts for attractions. The journey to the mountain is an experience in itself: as soon as you leave the city, you'll encounter stunning rural landscapes, rice fields, and from Hashimoto, the mountains begin. I was taking photos every kilometer. Then, there's a 10-minute ride on a special cable car through the forest up the mountain, followed by a 15-minute bus ride along winding roads to the town. Check-in at the temples is usually by 6 PM. If you don't have heavy luggage, take a walk first. The area isn't very large, and you can get everywhere on foot (buses are only necessary if you're short on time). Points of interest include Kondo, Kongobu-ji (a fairly large complex with many traditional rooms featuring beautiful interiors, screens, and painted walls), the Reihokan Museum, Konpon Daito, and the Tokugawa Mausoleum. Check into the temple and enjoy the peace and tranquility. This is what captivated me about this place. It's incredibly serene: the sounds of birds, rustling trees, and the trickling of water in Japanese gardens surround you. I happened to visit during rain, which I cursed while walking under an umbrella but later found soothing as I opened the shoji to the balcony at night and fell asleep to its sound. The monks at Jimyo-in Temple speak good English. However, this isn't the case at every temple, as I discovered when I accidentally entered the wrong one and had difficulty communicating. Relax in the communal bath. Initially, I felt awkward, but it was incredibly rejuvenating after the travel fatigue. Dinner is excellent, but keep in mind that it's vegetarian and includes a lot of tofu. If this doesn't suit you, consider bringing some snacks in advance. At night, visit the cemetery for a walk. It's stunningly beautiful. Day 2: Temples usually hold morning prayers at 6:30 AM. Afterward, there's breakfast, and you can leave immediately if you're in a hurry. However, I recommend savoring the moment and sitting in the silence a bit longer. 🏨 Accommodation: Definitely choose one of the temples in Koya-san. It's essential for an unforgettable experience and immersion in Buddhist culture. 🍴 Food: The town offers a variety of options, from traditional Japanese cuisine to street food, sweets, ice cream, drinks, and coffee (note: there are no 24-hour establishments in the town). However, I recommend enjoying the vegetarian meals at the temple where you stay. IMPORTANT! When booking, opt for plans that include dinner and breakfast; otherwise, you'll miss out on a lot. 📌 If you're traveling from Osaka/Kyoto, just start early (at least by 8 AM, but earlier is better), and two days will be enough. 📌 If you're coming from Tokyo, I recommend allocating three days. 📌 Tickets for the rapid train to Koya-san come with unreserved seats (like in the subway), reserved seats, and first-class options. If you're not traveling during peak holiday seasons, don't worry—unreserved seats will have plenty of availability.

Japan Travel✈️ Almost forgot to share this super niche Kansai itinerary! 🤔 This one's for those who love off-the-beaten-path cultural experiences + food adventures, and might feel anxious about language barriers! 🚗Day 1: Departure - Osaka Direct flight from Shanghai to Kansai Airport (for those without direct flights, connecting flights can be arranged). To ease the stress for those less confident in language skills, we've arranged a Chinese-speaking driver for airport pickup! Check into hotels in Shinsaibashi area - this district has amazing hotels popping up constantly! From the Ritz-Carlton near Michelin-starred Kikunoi to the reasonably priced Hilton... Personally I prefer the all-black W Hotel! Located right on Shinsaibashi main street, just 10 minutes walk to Dotonbori - perfect for shopping and dining. 🚗Day 2: Osaka - Wakayama Don't miss the themed train experience here! The train cars feature adorable cat-themed paintings and decorations - even the stationmaster is a cat! The 30-minute ride offers views of Japanese countryside shrines and pastoral landscapes, giving strong "Kikujiro's Summer" vibes! Right outside the station stands Wakayama's landmark - Wakayama Castle's main keep! Then board our private Chinese-speaking guide's vehicle to visit Kimiidera Temple, watch the tuna cutting show at the seafood market, and enjoy various Japanese BBQ. After feasting, head straight to a seaside ryokan with hot springs! 🚗Day 3-6: Koya-san - Nara - Kyoto For a deeper Koya-san experience, try temple lodging (shukubo)! This temple represents Japanese aesthetics + aristocratic lifestyle with high status - money can't necessarily buy this experience. Spend the day accompanied by morning bells, evening drums, and ancient Buddhist rituals - the ultimate travel recharge! Next day stop by Nara! For lunch I recommend a teahouse serving Yamato cuisine. Then proceed to Kyoto hotels. This time I chose Four Seasons Kyoto - opposite Kyoto National Museum, next to Myohoji Temple, across from Shin-Hie Shrine, and within walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera and Sannenzaka. Need I say more about why I picked this hotel? Kyoto is all about ancient temples and traditional/Michelin dining! My temple route: Nanzenji - Sanzenin - Kibune Shrine - Arashiyama. Kibune Shrine has special summer illuminations. Also try seasonal kawayuka dining on river platforms. Arashiyama offers boat rides, retro trains, hidden mountain Michelin vegetarian cuisine, and century-old wagashi making. Night walk to illuminated Yasaka Shrine for digestion! 🚗Day 7-8: Uji - Osaka Compact Uji can be explored in half a day - the golden Phoenix Hall at Byodoin, Uji River, vermilion torii gates, and irresistible matcha dessert street... Experiencing authentic Japanese culture without expensive tickets is my ideal travel scenario. Since Japanese summers get hot, we planned evening visits to Osaka Expo sites - besides daytime attractions, you get spectacular light shows and drone performances!
