Beautiful Haedong Yonggungsa Temple by the Sea

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (해동용궁사), located in Gijang-gun, Busan, is one of the few Buddhist temples in South Korea situated by the seaside. It is widely admired for its stunning coastal scenery and traditional Buddhist architecture. Historical Background • Founding of the Temple (1376): The temple was established during the Goryeo Dynasty by the renowned monk Naong Hyegeun. Inspired by a dream in which the god of the East Sea prayed for national prosperity, he chose this location where mountains and sea meet to build the temple, seeking peace and prosperity for the nation. • Destroyed by war, rebuilt in modern times: The temple was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). It was later reconstructed by monks from Tongdosa Temple in the 1930s and officially named "Haedong Yonggungsa" in 1974. Breathtaking Scenery and Architectural Features • Unlike most temples located in the mountains, Haedong Yonggungsa is perched by the sea, embodying the concept of a "marine dragon palace." Its magnificent views, shimmering waves, and especially the sunrise create an enchanting atmosphere. • The temple's architecture is vibrant and elegant, adhering to traditional styles. Key structures include the main prayer hall, a three-story stone pagoda (with a lion base symbolizing joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure), a 108-step descending stone staircase, and a grotto shrine. • The temple's most iconic feature is the **Haesu Gwaneum Daebul** (Sea Water Bodhisattva), a golden statue of the Buddha facing the East Sea.
