Cardiff: Castles, Culture & Coastal Vibes — A Perfect Welsh Getaway

Just wrapped up a short trip to Cardiff, the charming capital of Wales, and it definitely exceeded expectations. Cardiff might be small compared to other UK cities, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to history, culture, and atmosphere. The highlight for me was definitely Cardiff Castle, right in the heart of the city. From ancient Roman walls to the lavish Victorian interiors, the mix of history here is fascinating. Climbing up the old Norman keep gave me amazing views of the city — worth every step! Another pleasant surprise was how walkable the city is. Strolling through Bute Park, with its riverside paths and greenery, was a perfect way to relax after sightseeing. The park stretches along the castle grounds and makes the city feel spacious and green. For a taste of local culture, I checked out St Fagans National Museum of History, an open-air museum showcasing traditional Welsh life — from old cottages to working mills. It’s free to enter and only a short bus ride from the city centre. No trip to Cardiff is complete without exploring the Cardiff Bay area. I loved the modern contrast of the bay with its waterfront cafes, the Wales Millennium Centre, and historic spots like the Pierhead Building. Sunset by the bay was the perfect way to end the day. Overall, Cardiff has that perfect balance of history, culture, and laid-back vibes. It’s compact, friendly, and easy to explore — ideal for a weekend break.
