Cardiff, My Incredible Home Town. Top Tips For This Hidden Gem Of the U.K.!

I might be a bit biased but I think Cardiff is one of the absolute highlights of the UK, having been born and raised there I have so much pride in my hometown. The capital of wales has for a long time been an amazing alternate tourist destination, with so much to offer in a relatively small city. Located on the south coast of wales it has a very unique vibe, it has a lot of history yet it’s recently economic growth has led to a very young and modern vibe throughout the city. The highlights for me in the city center are the historic castle, bute park and iconic arcades that connect the main shopping districts. They offer antique shops, vintage stores and plenty of coffee shops - all within stunning Victorian arcades with original features, balcony's and stained glass windows. The castle is iconic as it is very rare to find a big city with such a historic monument at the end of it’s main high street, it has stunning castle grounds and some beautifully restored rooms in the main building. Cardiff bay is the site of one of the most successful urban renewal projects in the world, the Cardiff barrage constructed in the 90’s turned the bay into a man made lake that spurred rapid development. Famed as a hub for the coal trade over 100 years ago Cardiff bay faced a decline after, but the barrage has helped created shopping and entertainment districts, marinas and some pretty amazing spots to get photos of the ever growing skyline. Further out of the city you have the seaside town of Penarth, a Victorian era town with a laid back vibe mixed with a strong coffee shop and crafting scene. There are many independent stores and restaurants here with a very unique flare, I always love coming here on the weekends in summer to complete unwind and feel off grid. St Fagans museum and castle about 45 minutes outside of Cardiff is a museum dedicated to the history of the way of life in Wales. It features buildings from around the country from different time periods that have been reconstructed brick by brick, a one of a kind experience you have to make time for in Cardiff. Overall I think there really is something for everyone here in Cardiff, and with a recent burst of hotels opening and good transport connections to London it is a great budget weekend if you want to see more of the UK! #citydaytours #travel #thingstodo #cardiff #niche #wales #museums
