Lake Wakatipu

Lake Wakatipu, shaped like lightning, is the third largest lake in New Zealand. The Dart River is located at the north end of the lake, where the lake water flows in; the Kawarau River originates from Queenstown, and the lake water flows out from here. Due to the intense glacial movement, Lake Wakatipu was formed, surrounded by mountains. Among them, Mount Earnslaw is the highest, with an altitude of 2819 meters. The towns around the lake include Queenstown, the villages of Kingston, Glenorchy, and Kinloch. Due to the unique shape of Lake Wakatipu, a unique "tidal" phenomenon (more accurately, a large lake quake or "standing wave") is formed on the lake surface, and the water surface rises and falls about 10 cm every 25 minutes. According to the legend of the Maori people, this is because a water monster named Matau is sleeping at the bottom of the lake, and it is its heartbeat that causes the phenomenon of "tide rise and fall" on the lake surface.
