Wat Phan Tao is an ancient temple in Chiang Mai. In the past, Chiang Mai people called this temple “Wat Pan Tao” (Thousand Times). There is also another source that says that this temple was once used as a place to build hundreds or thousands of kilns to cast Buddha images, so it was named “Wat Phan Tao”. At the back of the Phra Wihan Ho Kham Luang is the main pagoda of the temple, shaped like a bell on an octagonal base, surrounded by pagodas. Wat Phan Tao has a ceremony to offer candles, which is a replica of the offering of candles in India. It is held on important Buddhist holy days four times a year: Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day, Asalha Bucha Day, and Loi Krathong Day. Monks and novices chant and perform a candle-floating ceremony. Candles are placed around the temple, which attracts many tourists.
