Hakata's Green Street Corners: A Strolling Guide to Reisen Park

#JulyDestinations2025 Reizen Park, located in Kamikawabata-cho, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, is a neighborhood park spanning approximately 11,837 square meters, opened in 1955. It is adjacent to the Nakasu-Kawabata shopping district and Kawabata-dori shopping street. Despite its small size, the park's lush greenery and elegant scenery make it a popular spot for locals and tourists to stroll and relax. Every spring, the park's several cherry blossoms bloom, attracting crowds of people to photograph and admire the blossoms. It is one of the few places in the city where one can easily experience the changing seasons. One of the park's most historically significant structures is the Fukuoka Air Raid Memorial Monument. These two monuments, approximately 10 and 4 meters tall, were erected in 1965 to commemorate the victims of the US air raid on Fukuoka on June 19, 1945. For half a century, it has served as an important memorial site, symbolizing the memory of war and peace. However, due to the monument's age and structural damage from earthquakes, the surrounding area has been cordoned off since 2025 for safety reasons and is currently closed to the public, raising concerns about its future preservation. Besides its historical commemoration, Reizen Park frequently hosts various markets and events. In 2024, it hosted the Fukuoka Beer Festival, which featured numerous stalls and musical performances, showcasing the vibrant local culture. The nearby Reizenso is also worth a visit. This private housing complex, built in the early postwar period and currently in the process of being designated a national tangible cultural property, houses design studios, art spaces, and co-working offices, creating a creative hub that blends old and new. 🚶♂️Access: From JR Hakata Station, take the subway to Nakasu-Kawabata Station and walk about 10 minutes.
