A time-traveling destination in Fuzhou

Fuzhou's Shangxiahang area is a living museum of Min merchants' culture, where the memories of a bustling port from a century ago are hidden between the cobblestone streets and weathered arcades. This area has preserved the old sites of merchant guilds, ancient mansions (such as the Caifeng Villa), and traditional workshops from the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. The restored architectural complex is both rustic and exquisite. Strolling along the Sanjie River, with red lanterns reflecting in the water, feels like stepping back into the golden era of "goods arriving with the tide and ships docking at the market." Today, the area incorporates creative shops, cafes, and traditional Min cuisine establishments (like the famous Erlongbo Yuanxiao). When the lights come on at night, the atmosphere becomes even more charming. Although some parts of the area may feel slightly commercialized, it remains the best place to experience Fuzhou's "dock culture" and local life. It is recommended to pair your visit with Cangxia Park. Taking a leisurely evening stroll after dinner is a delightful choice.
