Five Mazu Goddesses

The only Five Mazu Goddesses in the world are enshrined in the Dade Mazu Tourist Area. The Five Mazu Goddesses of Shanwei are: Mazu Lin Moniang, Zheng Zuxi, Zhuang Jingyun, Lin Shuxian, and Mo Mei. Here are their detailed introductions: - Mazu Lin Moniang: From Meizhou, Fujian, she has been deified by the people. Knowledgeable in astronomy, geography, divination, medicine, astrology, and navigation, she was charitable and often rescued fishing boats and merchant ships at sea. She was revered as a deity by the people of her time and later honored as the "Goddess of the Sea," the goddess in charge of maritime navigation.  - Zheng Zuxi: The younger sister of national hero Zheng Chenggong, she came from a martial arts family. She often accompanied her brother on expeditions. In March of the eighth year of Shunzhi, Zheng Chenggong's fleet encountered a storm off Baisha Lake in Shanwei on its way to Fujian. The warships led by Zheng Zuxi encountered Qing soldiers. She fought bravely but was eventually outnumbered and hit by poisoned arrows. She died heroically two days later from her severe injuries at the age of 20. Legend has it that she appeared to save fishermen at sea, and coastal residents raised funds to build the "Zheng Zuxi Temple" during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, honoring her as the "Diamond Mazu." - Zhuang Jingyun: Intelligent and eager to learn, she studied medicine with her father from a young age. By her teens, she was practicing medicine alongside him, often curing difficult and complicated diseases. Her neighbors called her "Hua Tuo reborn, a fairy descended from heaven." - Lin Shuxian: A legendary woman from Lufeng, she was intelligent and skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. Kind and helpful, she had a compassionate heart and often provided money and food to help poor villagers and neighbors, solving their problems and earning the love and respect of the local people. - Mo Mei: The goddess of Luofeng Mountain, surnamed Mo, given name Mei. After a flash flood destroyed her temple, she drifted to Dade Mountain. With nowhere to go, Mazu appeared in a dream to the temple keeper, saying that she was a benevolent and efficacious deity who should be worshipped. Since then, she has been enshrined by the local people. The Mazu statue is on the mountaintop. When you get close, you can only look up at it. There is a smaller statue at the mountain entrance, which offers a full view. The nearby Dade Mazu Temple is exquisite and enjoys great popularity.
