Kiyomizu-dera Temple: Kyoto's Thousand-Year Guardian

In the early morning, Kyoto is wrapped in a light mist, as if the ancient capital is draped in a mysterious veil. Following the winding stone path upward, Kiyomizu-dera Temple comes into view. This ancient temple, founded in 778, has withstood a thousand years of wind and rain, standing firm as it guards Kyoto's tranquility and peace. The main hall of Kiyomizu-dera is solemn and dignified, with its wooden structure appearing more rustic after centuries of aging. The temple's iconic Kiyomizu Stage, supported by 139 large wooden pillars suspended in mid-air, seems like a crystallization of ancient wisdom. Standing on the stage, with a gentle breeze caressing your face, you can take in the panoramic view of Kyoto city—ancient temples, winding streets, and distant mountains forming a breathtakingly beautiful tableau. Descending from the Kiyomizu Stage, you'll find Otowa Waterfall. Three streams cascade down from above, creating a gentle, poetic sound. Visitors line up to taste the water using copper ladles, as it's said to bring good fortune. I was no exception, taking a small sip while silently making a beautiful wish. Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the two slopes near Kiyomizu-dera, are streets full of ancient charm. Lined with shops selling various traditional crafts and Kyoto specialty snacks, walking through them feels like touching the soul of Kyoto with every step. From Kyoto Station, it takes less than 30 minutes by bus to reach Kiyomizu-dera, and the entrance fee is only 400 yen, yet it offers an unforgettable journey.
