#summervacay I just stumbled upon a truly remarkable and somewhat hidden treasure within the bustling City of London: the Guildhall Art Gallery! This municipal art gallery, nestled right in the heart of the financial district, feels surprisingly undiscovered. A History of Resilience and Rediscovery: Built back in 1885, it was originally meant to show off the City of London Corporation's growing art collection. But tragically, it was almost completely destroyed during a severe air raid in World War II. After a long time of planning and fixing, a new building finally opened to the public in 1999. And get this – it was during that reconstruction that archaeologists made an astonishing discovery right beneath my feet: the remains of an ancient Roman Amphitheatre! The Roman Amphitheatre: A Glimpse into Londinium's Past 🏟️ This amphitheatre, built in the 1st century AD, was the main entertainment spot for the Romans in London. It could hold an impressive 7,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests. Today, I can still step into this space, and with the help of lighting and projections, it powerfully brings to life the grand atmosphere of that Roman arena as it once was. It's truly amazing!
