The Trafalgar

The Trafalgar is located on a quiet residential street in South Wimbledon. The nearest Tube station is South Wimbledon. The pub was built in 1868. A single-storey extension was added in 1906, doubling the size of the original tiny pub. It was also known as the “Threepenny Hop” because men leaving Merton Abbey Station would hop over the fence for a pint. The Trafalgar is the smallest pub in the borough of Merton. This one-bar pub has a homely, old-school feel and is traditionally decorated. The “P”-shaped servery sits in the left corner, next to a tiled fireplace and poser tables on a boarded floor. To the right, there’s a cosy seating area with dark-panelled walls, pews, another fireplace, and a proper pub carpet. Stained and etched windows, nautical pictures, beer mats across the ceiling and assorted knick-knacks add to the charm. To the side of the pub is a walled beer garden with benches. The beer selection is excellent, offering a diverse mix of keg beers, cask ales, and ciders. There’s also an extensive choice of canned and bottled beers. I decided on a Flensburger Lager, My pint hit the spot and pleasingly cost less than the comparable average. This is a wet-led pub, so no food is served — but there are plenty of bags of Tayto’s and Scampi Fries.
