Zheng Family Mansion on Changle Street, Miluo, Hunan

The Zheng Family Mansion was built by its founder Zheng Zhigui in the 10th year of the Daoguang reign (1830) as a grand residential complex. This famous Changle landmark and red revolutionary site is located at Huilongmen on Changle Street along the north bank of the Miluo River, representing a late Qing Dynasty ancient residence with traditional southern Chinese architectural style. The entire compound was constructed along ancient Changle Street, roads, and the riverside, comprising 8 major courtyards, 24 smaller courtyards, 24 skywells, 1,080 rooms, and 108 street-facing shops, covering nearly 10,000 square meters - occupying most of Changle at its peak. During its heyday, the mansion had interconnected passageways where each section could function as independent courtyards or combine into one integrated complex, with 24 stone gateways allowing access from any room directly to Changle Main Street. Unfortunately, most structures were destroyed during wars in the late Qing Dynasty and Anti-Japanese War period, leaving only a few remaining buildings and two skywells today. In 1930, the CPC Xiangbei Special Committee relocated from Jiayi, Pingjiang to this mansion in Changle Street, Miluo. Serving as the temporary office for the Special Committee, this site witnessed revolutionary struggles led by the committee across northern Hunan regions including Pingjiang, Linxiang, Yueyang, and Xiangyang counties. Under the Special Committee's direct leadership, the Miluo Soviet Area achieved historic victories in people's struggles. In 2021, this historic site was designated as a Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit of Hunan Province.
