Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama Prefecture, known for the legend of Momotaro

Located in Okayama Prefecture, Kibitsu Shrine enshrines Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto, who is said to be the model for the famous Japanese folktale 'Momotaro.' The corridor leading to the main hall, believed to have been built during the Sengoku period, stretches 398 meters. The main hall, featuring a unique architectural style called Kibitsu-zukuri with two chidorihafu gables arranged front and back, was rebuilt during the Muromachi period after being destroyed by fire twice. The shrine also houses a building called the Okamaden, where the Narukama Shinto ritual is performed. This ritual is based on the legend that the head of the demon Ura, defeated by Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto, is buried here, and the sound of the kettle is used to divine fortunes. This shrine, steeped in legend, offers impressive architecture and a serene atmosphere. While access may be slightly inconvenient without a car, it is not overly crowded, making it a hidden gem.
