Irkutsk | Lake Baikal Awakening

Many have visited Lake Baikal, either to see the blue lake when it's "awake" or the blue ice when it's "asleep." But have you ever wondered what Lake Baikal looks like when it's half-awake? In early 2025, Russia experienced a mild winter, with temperatures in Irkutsk soaring above 20°C at the end of March. Much of Lake Baikal had already thawed, but Listvyanka was one of the few places where the lake surface remained frozen. Unlike in summer and autumn, winter visits to Lake Baikal are primarily for ice activities. Posing for photos, hiking, ice skating, hovercraft rides, and off-road vehicle excursions each offer unique and beautiful experiences. One thing is certain: the blue ice effect only appears under specific sunlight conditions and from certain angles. Many "photos" online are actually post-processed. Finally, the thawing of Lake Baikal is not only physically cold but also "cold" in a cognitive sense. The ice, frozen for months, gradually loosens under the sunlight. Some ice chunks become brittle, even breakable by hand. However, unlike the ice we typically see in northern cities or refrigerators, the ice of Lake Baikal shatters into needle-like or block-shaped crystals, offering a truly spectacular sight.
