Tiger’s Nest Monastery – A Sacred Trek That Tests Your Limits

The hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (locals called it Paro Taktsang) is one of Bhutan’s most iconic experiences — and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype… and the challenge. I started the climb early at 7am, and the whole round trip (ascent + descent) took me over 6 hours. Strangely enough, I found the ascent easier — slow, steady, and with plenty of short breaks. But the descent was tougher on the knees, especially with the constant thumping on rocky trails. I even saw a few experienced hikers switch to open-toe sandals on the way down to reduce abrasion on their toes — pretty smart! A few things to note: • There are no toilets along the trail, so definitely clear your bowels before starting. • The monastery sits at high altitude, so it’s important to get acclimatized beforehand — I did a couple of easy hikes first to prep. • Don’t rush. Take your time, hydrate, and let the beauty of the mountains carry you forward. The view of the monastery clinging to the cliff face is beyond breathtaking — and the sense of accomplishment when you reach it?
