Alcantara Gorges

Alcantara Gorges (Gole dell’Alcantara) is a spectacular canyon formed by the lava flow from Mount Etna, which over time has been shaped by the river's erosion into towering basalt walls (up to 50 meters) with winding water formations. The main route offers two options: you can descend on foot via 200 steps for €1.50, or take the elevator from the botanical park for a higher entrance fee (€8–13). This destination is perfect for a scenic walk, refreshing swims in cool waters, and guided tours. For the more adventurous, activities like river trekking and body rafting are available along thrilling sections with waterfalls and natural pools. Some advice: during peak season, it can get crowded, and the water is cold (around 8°C), so bring suitable footwear, water, and visit in the morning to fully enjoy this natural gem.
