It was built in the 2nd century AD to honor Celsus, the son of Celsus, the governor of the Roman Empire. There are four statues of goddesses in front of the Celsus Library, each symbolizing wisdom, judgment, learning, and virtue. The original is said to be on display at a museum in Austria. There is a story that Austria also participated in the excavation of the Celsus Library, so they claimed the right to take the original.... Although it lost much of its original appearance due to the earthquake, the front of the library is still well preserved. Even if only the front part remained, it would have been called one of the world's three greatest libraries. I wonder how wonderful it would have been if it had been preserved as it was.
