Where the Forest Breathes: Shiretoko Goko

Deep in the heart of Shiretoko Peninsula lies Shiretoko Goko (Five Lakes) — a place where time slows down and nature quietly reminds you of its wonder. Even without a guide, you can take in the view of Lake Ikko from a scenic raised boardwalk, free of charge and accessible to all. But for those curious to explore deeper — especially during bear season (May to late July) — you’ll need to join a certified local guide. Don’t worry: there are many to choose from, and they’re full of stories and knowledge about this UNESCO-listed forest. We spotted Ezo deer, a sleeelping snake, and delicate alpine flowers blooming by the trail. The air was rich with the scent of moss and birch, and the forest felt alive — quietly watching. 🌧️ Pro tip: The trails can get muddy, so wear shoes that don’t mind a mess. And during warm months, bug repellent is a must — the mosquitoes here know no mercy! While spring to autumn offers the most color, Shiretoko Goko is open year-round, with winter hiking possible on snowshoes. No matter the season, it's a place to walk gently, listen deeply, and feel small in the best way. --- 📝 Practical Info: Location: Shiretoko Goko (Five Lakes), Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido Access: ~1 hr by car from Utoro area What you can do: 🚶♂️ Walk the free elevated boardwalk to Lake Ikko 🐻 Join a guided tour to access all five lakes during bear season (May–July) ❄️ Enjoy winter hiking (snowshoes recommended) Wildlife sightings: Ezo deer, snake, birds, seasonal flowers What to bring: -Drinking water -Bug repellent (May–Sept) -Shoes that can get dirty — trails may be muddy Guides: Available locally; check online or at Shiretoko Nature Center #知床五湖 #ShiretokoGoko #ShiretokoFiveLakes #HokkaidoNature #UNESCOWorldHeritage #EzoDeer #北海道の旅 #ポストカード日記 #日本の秘境 #知床散策 #森の旅 #四季のある暮らし

Shiretoko Peninsula

We're in Hokkaido for 15 days on a self driving trip. We visited key areas like Sapporo, Otaru, Kushiro, shari, Utoro, Asahikawa, Furano and Biei. Generally it was a place to relax and immerse yourself into nature. Well known places like Sapporo and Hakodate typically come to mind when talking about Hokkaido, but I would recommend the Shiretoko Peninsula and Asahikawa. For nature lovers. Shiretoko offers breathtaking views of mountains, lakes and seas. At Asahikawa. one can get the convenience of staying in a city and still be able to cover places like Biei and Furano, where there are beautiful views of flower orchards and paddy fields (where sunset view is quite stunning). One place which seldom gets recommendations (or it does? i could be wrong...) is Daisetsuzan National Park. When the weather is good and the sky is clear, take the skyway to the top and the view will make your trip worthwhile. I was up there in early June summer, there's still snow on which the children enjoy playing, as well as trails with running waters due to the melting snow. Nice experience. The zoo at Asahikawa is quite enjoyable too.

#5月好去处2025 During this trip to Hokkaido, I finally came to a stop on my dream list - Shiretoko Five Lakes. This is part of the World Natural Heritage "Shiretoko Peninsula" and is known as one of the most primitive and natural places in Japan. Five quiet lakes lie quietly in the primeval forest, reflecting each other with the distant Shiretoko Mountains, as if time has slowed down. Walking through the Shiretoko Five Lakes will make you truly feel the weight of the saying "Man is part of nature". Here, time slows down, and nature is no longer just a landscape, but a way of existence. This is a journey that will remain deeply in your heart. If you come to Hokkaido, you must not miss it.
