[Croatia] Split Diocletian's Palace

#AbsolutelyFreeTrip Split, the second largest city in Croatia, is the largest port city on the Adriatic coast. It is popular as a resort destination because it is located on the coast, but its history is long, dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. The origins of the city of Split date back to the late 3rd century to early 4th century when Roman Emperor Diocletian built a palace on the coast as a retirement residence after abdicating, and spent his later years there. After his death, the palace fell into ruins, but over the course of several hundred years, foreign peoples who moved there left only the foundations of the palace and built buildings on top of it. Today, a mysterious space spreads out, with buildings that were added over each era mixed together, based on the palace built by Diocletian. The original parts are also extremely well preserved, and in 1979 the entire palace was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the "Historic Monuments of Split with Diocletian's Palace". On the south side of the palace's courtyard, Peristil, there are short stairs leading up and down, and at the top is the vestibule, a circular hall. If you go down the stairs, you will find the entrance to the underground tour. Here you can see the well-preserved interior of the palace.
