Heartbeat of the Earth - Bromo’s Crater

Following the sunrise viewpoint at Bromo, the journey continues to the base of Mount Bromo. If traveling by jeep, the trip typically takes about an hour, depending on traffic conditions. Once arrived, visitors can choose to walk to the crater or opt for a round-trip horse ride, which generally costs between IDR 150,000 and IDR 200,000—depending on your negotiation skill. The horse ride covers the distance from the jeep parking area across up to the base of the 250 steps leading to the crater rim. You’ll need to climb the stairs on your own. Many travelers prefer the horse ride, especially since the path is covered with volcanic ash and, admittedly, horse droppings. For comfort, wearing a mask is highly recommended during this part of the journey. After climbing the 250 steps to the crater rim, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the active volcano, where thick smoke rises from deep within the crater. However, caution is needed, as there are little to no railings along the edge. One of the interesting highlights at the crater is the dried Edelweiss flowers—a delicate white bloom native to the highlands of Java. Symbolizing purity and resilience, Edelweiss thrives even in the harsh volcanic landscape. The flower is thrown into the crater as a symbolic offering, representing sacrifice and devotion to the deities believed to reside within the mountain. The dried flower can be purchased at the bottom of the 250 steps.
