I’m not exactly sure at what moment I started feeling that this hike was worth it. Along the trail, you’ll see parents holding hands with their children, laughing and strolling leisurely; or local joggers passing by with a calm and composed demeanor. As I gasped for breath, I found myself observing everyone’s pace, then quietly pulling myself back together, taking each step firmly. My favorite part is the stretch near the summit, where the wind suddenly picks up, carrying a salty tang of the sea. The moment the view opens up, you can’t help but stop and do nothing—just standing there, gazing at the ocean feels like enough. The summit doesn’t have many facilities, but there are a few flat rocks that are perfect for sitting and daydreaming. On the way down, I felt as if the sea breeze had dried me out completely, leaving all my worries behind. It’s a feeling of "I’ve made the most of today," a moment that doesn’t need to be captured in photos to be remembered vividly—the air itself is unforgettable. Mount Maunganui offers more than just scenery; it provides a steady companionship. As you walk through it, it reveals its most beautiful side to you.
