A day trip around Ueno! Kan'eiji Temple

#0yentravelFebruary2025 Toeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple, a special head temple of the Tendai sect, is a temple boasting a vast site founded in 1625 by the great priest Jigen Daishi Tenkai, who was the devout follower of three generations of the Tokugawa family. It was damaged in the Ueno War at the end of the Edo period, and most of the site became Ueno Park. The mountain name of this Kan'ei-ji Temple in Ueno is "Toeizan," which means "Mount Hiei in the East." The buildings and layout of Kan'ei-ji Temple at that time are said to be modeled after the Tendai sect's head temple, Mount Hiei Enryaku-ji, which had the role of praying for the peace of the imperial court, and the surrounding shrines and temples.
