📍 [Nishiarai Daishi Sojiji Temple (Gochisan Henjoin), Adachi Ward, Tokyo] A time of healing and prayer at this ancient temple associated with Kobo Daishi Kukai, known as the "Temple of Flowers and Protection from Evil" with a history of about 1,200 years. ⸻ 🌟Charms and Sights • The legend of the eleven-headed Kannon and Daishi statue carved by Kukai: In 826, Kobo Daishi performed a goma ritual for 21 days with the Kannon statue as the principal image to save villagers suffering from an epidemic, and clear water gushed forth. This is said to be the origin of the place name "Nishiarai". • Tower gate (Niomon) from the late Edo period: The two-story tower gate made entirely of keyaki wood is imposing. It is decorated with carvings of cats, dragons, and the twelve Chinese zodiac animals, and is also registered as a cultural property designated by Adachi Ward. • Peony Garden & Seasonal Flowers: In spring, 2,500 peonies of 100 varieties bloom in abundance, leading to the nickname "Hasedera in the West, Nishiarai in the East." Wisteria, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves also adorn the temple grounds. ⸻ 🕓 Information on worship and events • Visiting hours: 9:00-16:30 (last admission 16:20)  • Free to visit the temple grounds, but there is a fee for goma prayers and copying sutras • The 21st of each month is the festival day for Kobo Daishi, and there are many stalls lined up and many worshippers come to visit  • Many events throughout the year: Setsubun Daruma Memorial Service (2/3), Flower Festival, Wind Chime Festival (early July), Summer Festival, Hokusai Memorial (October), Osame no Daishi (12/21), etc.  ⸻ 🚇 Access • Train: About 1 minute walk from Daishimae Station on the Tobu Daishi Line (about 20 minutes walk from Nishiarai Daishi Nishi Station on the Nippori-Toneri Liner)  • Car: No parking lot → Use of nearby paid parking is recommended ⸻ 🧭 Travel tips • Early morning or weekday morning is the best time: less crowded and you can relax • Visit when the flowers are in full bloom: Peonies are at their peak in early to mid-April.
