After James Watts and William Gooderham established and expanded the mill in 1831, it was abandoned due to industrial decline and was designated as a protected site under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1976. It was redeveloped and opened as a historic preservation space in 2003, and is now a pedestrian-only cultural space consisting of a total of 47 Victorian-style industrial buildings.
